A Revealing Checkbook...

Ron Blue on faking... "You can't fake stewardship. Your checkbook reveals all you really believe about stewardship…your goals, priorities, convictions, relationships, and even the use of your time. A person who has been a Christian even for a short while can fake prayer, Bible study, evangelism, going to church, and so on, but he can't fake what his checkbook reveals" (Ron Blue, Master Your Money, 20)

A. Paul gives two examples of becoming rich through generous giving (2 Cor. 8:1-9).

1. The Rich Macedonians Examples of real wealth... A Poor "Rich" Area

How to Get Rich 2 Corinthians 8:1-15

Paul redefines true wealth Macedonia Corinth The Macedonians showed "rich generosity" (8:2). The Corinthians were rich through Christ (8:9). God promises that those who fulfill certain conditions "will be made rich in every way" (9:11). "Rich" in 2 Corinthians 8–9

The Macedonians gave way beyond what their means could support (2 Cor. 8:1-3a) "And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2 Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability."

Give her credit! Two Mites Mark 12:41-44

The Macedonians gave of their own initiative (2 Cor. 8:3b-4) "Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints."

They went beyond money by giving themselves to God and to meet Paul's companions' needs (2 Cor. 8:5) "And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will."

The Corinthians should also give money generously just as they had fully given themselves in other areas (2 Cor. 8:6-7) "So we urged Titus, since he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. 7 But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—see that you also excel in this grace of giving."

II. Generosity replaces procrastination with proportional and purposeful giving (2 Cor. 8:10-15).

A. Like the Corinthians, we need follow-through—not procrastination!

The church at Corinth had promised a gift a year earlier and needed to stop procrastinating on its promise (2 Cor. 8:10-11). "And here is my advice about what is best for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. 11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means."

God holds us accountable for promises we've made too.

B. Like the Corinthians, we need proportionally generous giving (2 Cor. 8:12) "For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have."

Generosity is Relative "God assesses the 'value' of a monetary gift not in terms of the actual amount given, but by comparing what is given with the total financial resources of the giver" (Harris, Expositors Bible Commentary, 10:369).

C. Like the Corinthians we need to purposely invest in the less fortunate (2 Cor. 8:13-15). "Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14 At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality, 15 as it is written: 'He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little.'"
