Observations on 17:6-19 Major Themes Minor Themes Personal tone Prayer language Structure –1–17:6-11 Prayer for disciples who are out of, but still in the world –1–17:12-19 Prayer for disciples who are still in, but not of the world

I. Jesus Prays For His Disciples … Who Are Out Of, But Still In The World 6-11 A.Explanation Why praying for them: they were given to Him + God gave them … 6 + Now they know … 7 + Jesus gave them … 8 + Jesus prayed for disciples not the world … 9 + All Jesus … 10 B.Request 11 + Jesus no longer in the world + Disciples in the world => Keep through Your name those You gave to Me That they be one as We are one.

Applications 1.Do you see yourself as ‘given’ to Jesus out of the world? Do you see that you belong to Jesus even though you still live in the world? What does this mean to you? 2.Jesus specifically prayed that His disciples be unified. Does this mean you may have to make some adjustments? What might they be?

II. Jesus Prays For His Disciples … Who Are Still In, But Not Of The World A.Explanation Why praying for them: He is leaving them soon + While Jesus with them … 12 + Now Jesus coming to the Father … have My joy 13 + Jesus gave disciples the word of God … 14 B.Request Jesus does not ask … 15 + Jesus notes disciples not of the world 16 => Jesus asks the Father to sanctify them sends into the world

Peter James John

Applications 1.Christians should not withdraw from the world nor should they conform to the world, rather they show their difference by keeping Jesus’ words in the world. How should your life show that you are in the world but not of the world? How are you keeping Jesus’ words? 2.God’s word is His means of sanctifying you. Jesus prayed that His disciples would be sanctified. Are you regularly spending time in God’s word? 3.Jesus sent His disciples into the world. Why did He send them? Why does He send you? How does your life show that you are sent?
