Asylum: International Statistics

Lifeline Project Why? Thousands of asylum seekers continue to be forced into destitution in the UK. In 2004, we began to notice people coming in to our advice service who were refused “recourse to public funds” – they were absolutely destitute Forbidden to work refused access to state support of any kind Refused Housing or homeless accommodation or even an emergency hostel Asylum seekers are Subject to a notoriously inefficient asylum system – more than 100,000 letters left unopened by the UKBA! Discriminated against and stigmatised as scroungers

Lifeline Project What it does Offers temporary shelter in the homes of our volunteers or in hostels Runs an emergency hardship fund which gives out small crisis payments for food, essential travel and toiletries Provides practical advice and support, including arranging access to reputable lawyers, liaising with SRC over Section 4 applications Signposts destitute clients to other practical sources of support e.g. washing facilities, food banks, clothing, hygiene packs, sleeping bags

Lifeline Project Challenging Destitution In 2012, Positive Action in Housing provided emergency support to 313 destitute people. This is a 3.3% increase on the previous year. We assisted destitute asylum seekers from 44 countries (47 in 2011).

Lifeline Project Challenging Destitution We gave out emergency payments totaling £30,400 from the Hardship Fund to prevent people starving or becoming street homeless. (£29,100 in 2011). We provided 586 nights of free shelter through our volunteers and hostels, and assisted 24 clients.
