Storage Background o Limited # of slots some blankets coverage o Lost ID’s o Lack of security - Items get “lost” o Lack of rule enforcement – provokes storage of random items and hoarding o Inequity in slots and amount of items o Use of garbage bags

Customer Needs o Dignity for the “Urban Campers”! o A better method of carrying their belongings outside the house – no garbage bags o A more organized way for dealing with personal belongings o Secures ID’s and other personal documents o Prevent loss of items 1F450AAD7233CB E199-FAC B9854AC2A96 Sister Grace and CW Urban campers o Easy to administer o Method adapts to seasonal flow of urban campers o Doesn’t take much time o Prevent the storage of hazardous and perishable items o It is not one-person-dependent Administration

Insights Brainstorming, System Framework & Stakeholder Analysis Design for the non-typical “extreme” users – physical and mentally ill, hoarders, etc. Cooperate with Clothing and Intake systems Rules -Very important in order to sustain system

Challenge Statement efficient storage system simple to manage easy to embrace “How can we design an efficient storage system that is simple to manage by administration and easy to embrace by guests?”

Final Design - Overview Locker System in Basement for general storage + Tote Bags located upstairs in current area for the disabled Total Cost = US$2,037 $1,960 – Lockers $77 – Totes bags (100 units) $0 – Labor (Volunteers, current staff, recruit enthusiastic urban campers) $0 - Implementing Rule System, Training, ID Storage Look into donations local from schools under summer renovation!

Final Design – Lockers for Urban Campers Use existing locker layout (see prototype I) - Some located upstairs Lockers would be numbered and assigned to guests Can store tote bags Guests will receive locker and tote when Storage Liability Agreement is signed and ID is submitted

Final Design – Totes for Urban Campers Will replace Garbage Bags Can have the HoM logo printed, with address and phone number Hold up to 12 pounds Waterproof Standardizes the storage capacity per guest Can fit into locker for convenience Unused Bags can be stored in the upstairs special storage room Accessible to challenged urban campers: elders, ill, etc. Type Units Blank$0.77$0.70 Printed$1.46$ two-tone-tote-bags-tot71.jpg

Final Design – Interaction ID Storage (Process Flow)

Final Design – Interaction Storage Access (Process Flow)

Final Design – Interaction Audits (Process Flow)

Final Design – Personal Storage Rules 1.Storage Access will be twice a day with an attendant during their current morning and evening routine. 2.If guest needs to access is between times, they will have to talk to a staff member and sign a log. 3.The shelves located in the living area are for Disabled Guests ONLY! 4.Lockers must be neat and organized. 5.There will be locker cleanings every week with a staff member present. 6.There will be an audit once a month, in which staff members will review storage area and grade guests. 7.The guest with the highest score will be named Guest of the Month and will receive an incentive. 8.No storing items behind couches or in unused areas. 9.No storing of food, weapons and alcohol. 10. No storing more than two –three changes of clothes. (Use Clothing System!)

o Organization – Increase guests’ security – Standardization enhances equity o Optimization of Space – Using unused space in basement, create more space upstairs – Use of vertical space o Reduce clutter and hoarding – Reduce unwanted items – Benefits Clothing and Intake System o Tote bags – Enhancement of dignity – Secures items better o Increase administration authority – Prevents loss of IDs and items – Positive results increase trust and respect Problems Addressed and Benefits

Implementation Strategy Low Hanging Fruit – ID Storage System – Implement Weekly and Monthly Audits with incentives Guest of the Month Within 2-3 Months – Modify Rules and Implement into current system – Prepare New Storage Space/Layout – Start to Acquire Lockers and Bags Next 6 Months – Implement Lockers into area – Train administration of storage system – Open up new storage system Next 8 Months – Gain feed and make improvements

End of Life: Reuse and Recycle o Lockers -Can be broken down and used for other storage needs. -If damage makes them unusable, they could be sent to recycling facility. o Bags -Sewn together for other proposes -If damage makes them unusable, they could be sent to recycling facility Monroe County Curbside Recycling Program (585) Rochester, NY Metalico Rochester Rochester, NY 14623
