So, You Wanna Buy a Car? What goes into buying your own vehicle?

Why do you want to buy your own vehicle? To have more independence? Saves time getting from place to place? Makes you feel more mature? 1) Explain YOUR reasons for wanting to buy a vehicle.

Choosing a vehicle What kind of vehicle would fit my lifestyle and needs? Can I afford this type of vehicle, and all of the costs that come with it (insurance, registration, maintenance, gasoline)? How many passengers will I usually have?

Choosing a vehicle cont… Will I be able to take on the responsibility of owning my own vehicle? How far will I need to drive on a daily basis? How long will I expect to keep the vehicle? 2) Explain what vehicle YOU plan on purchasing and why.

Choosing a vehicle that is safe Does the vehicle have airbags? – In head-on collisions, most fatalities occur when the driver hits the steering wheel and suffers head or chest injuries. Antilock Brake System (ABS)? – Advantage: they let you steer around an obstacle even if you panic and slam on the brakes.

Choosing a vehicle that is safe How does the vehicle hold up in a crash test? What is the size of the vehicle? – The larger the vehicle, the more it protects you. Is the vehicle comfortable for you? – After all, you will be the one driving it. 3) Did you select a vehicle that is safe? Explain why or why not.

Choosing a fuel-efficient vehicle Consider the weight of the vehicle – The less weight an engine pulls, the more efficiently it works, which saves fuel. Type of Engine - The more cylinders the engine, the more fuel it uses.

Choosing a fuel-efficient vehicle Design – A streamlined vehicle has less air resistance than a vehicle with a boxy design. Type of Transmission – Manual transmission consumes less fuel that an automatic transmission. 4) Did you select a vehicle that is fuel- efficient? Explain why or why not.

How Much Should You Spend? How much should you pay for this vehicle? - Invoice (Cost to the dealer) - Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) - True Market Value (TMV) How will you purchase this vehicle? - Buy - Lease - Finance 5) State the price, and how you will go about paying for it.

Extra Costs Registration? - How much for your type of vehicle? Maintenance and repairs? - Will the vehicle need maintenance or repairs often? Insurance? - List the factors that will affect the cost of insurance and explain how. * 6) Includes all three costs.

Optional Features Are there any optional features you would like in your vehicle? - Power windows, adjustable seats - Moon/sun Roof - Spoiler 7) List the special features and why you chose them.
