An interview with my grandmother!

Written by famous author: Harper Lee To Kill A Mockingbird dives into the realm of the Great Depression, segregation, and racism that occurred in the deep southern state of Alabama in the 1930s. First published in 1960 Became a Pulitzer prize winner in 1961 Later made into Academy Award winning movie Renowned as a masterpiece of American Literature

Our wonderful host and on field reporter, Dr. Stratton Yatron, has been doing some immense research with the book To Kill A Mockingbird recently. He has been studying how award winning author, Harper Lee’s book relates to life now and how the book related to life in the 1930s. Today we will be showing you an interview with a woman who lived through the 1930s. This woman is Sarah D. Yatron; Dr. Yatron’s very own grandmother!

Mrs. Sarah D. Yatron Mrs. Yatron was 17 in 1935 and lived with her mother Lived in PA (North) Mrs. Yatron didn’t know or wanted to know what was happening in the world at the time People of Hamburg knew each other and were friendly Blacks excluded from community for the most part Mrs. Yatron and her family had some finical problems Racism was evident everywhere Scout was 5 and Jem was 9 in 1935 without a mother Lived in AL (South) Jem and Scout didn’t understand what was happening in the world at the time Citizens of Maycomb were kind to each other Blacks had their own community separate from Maycomb Jem and Scout didn’t have to worry too much about money unlike many in Maycomb Racism was evident everywhere To Kill a Mockingbird

Mrs. Sarah D. Yatron Hamburg had a Pool for kids in the summer Hamburg School had good teachers that inspired their students When Mrs. Yatron taught, you couldn’t discipline students in a physical way Mrs. Yatron feels Atticus is the Hero of the story Finally, during the civil right movement when white and colored schools had to mix, many protested After reading the book Mrs. Yatron believes that the book teaches tolerance and equality for all Maycomb was poor and didn’t have much for kids to do Scout’s teacher Miss Caroline didn’t inspire Scout Miss. Caroline disciplined students by patting them with a ruler Scout and Jem look up to Atticus as someone to go to when in trouble When Tom Robinson and Mayella were together Bob Ewell was furious and beat Mayella To Kill a Mockingbird
