Intelligent Database Systems Lab Presenter : NENG-KAI, HONG Authors : CÉSAR DOMÍNGUEZ, ARTURO JAIME 2014, CE Database design learning: A project-based approach organized through a coursemanagement system

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Outlines Motivation Objectives Methodology Experiments Conclusions Comments

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Motivation Database design entails considerable difficulty Traditional method vs. Project based learning

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Objectives Integrate both perspectives of a project as an effective database learning method. Organize, manage and control the development of project tasks and their deliverables by adopting a CMS tool. Examine the results of two academic years using this method.

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Methodology- project-based learning(PBL) A learning method based on developing projects. Students plan, implement, and evaluate projects that have real world application beyond the classroom.

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Methodology- project-based approach Project will be done by a student team following the ideas of PBL. Using a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and Gantt chart to divide a project into tasks.

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Methodology- project-based approach Students choose the database project topic according to their own interest. Role playing: developer & client Evaluation

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Methodology- database software and CMS Students need the use of two computer programs for their development: a database management system, and an XML editor Approximately 100,000 lines per table were randomly generated

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Methodology- database software and CMS CMS: 1.Learning method description 2.Team management 3.Task management 4.Communication

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Experiment - Research hypotheses 1.Students that follow the project-based method will obtain better results than their counterparts with a traditional method 2.The students that obtain excellent results preferred to follow the project-based method than the traditional one.

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Experiment - Research hypotheses 3.The project-based method will influence the whole student group 4.The project-based method will influence the students that only follow a traditional method

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Experiment – Research design Student numbers Project- based method Traditional method

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Experiment – Results and discussion The first hypothesis could be only partially supported

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Experiment – Results and discussion The second hypothesis could not be supported

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Experiment – Results and discussion The third hypothesis could be only partially supported

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Experiment – Results and discussion The fourth hypothesis could be only partially supported

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Conclusions Students that follow this method obtain better results than students that follow a traditional learning strategy. The introduction of such a method in a student subgroup positively influences the whole group.

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Conclusions further work: Individual contribution & free-riders Examine the effect of the PBL strategy in the long- term

Intelligent Database Systems Lab Comments Advantages – This paper find a new ways for the database course teaching, but the objectives mentioned in this article need more time to keep concerning.
