Conserving animals on the move for over 25 years Working Towards a Vision for 2020 Science We know that our science needs to be the basis for effective policy, monitoring and implementation; Develop research that: Understands connectivity is critical to conservation; Integrates diverse and new technologies and modelling; Understands species needs across all their habitats, seasonal and life-cycle interactions and carry over effects.

Conserving animals on the move for over 25 years Working Towards a Vision for 2020 Science We know we need to: Mix population/taxa specific research with habitat and ecosystem research Stress needs for adaptation strategies to emerging issues such as disease and climate change; Better understand needs for reintroductions of species and rewilding of habitats Ensure that research is relevant to policy need.

Conserving animals on the move for over 25 years Working Towards a Vision for 2020 Policy We know we need to: Communicate relevance; Increase societal concerns; Bring more people to the table; Be sophisticated in the use of existing paradigms; Develop safe diplomatic spaces to improve cooperation; © P. Tricorache

Conserving animals on the move for over 25 years Working Towards a Vision for 2020 Developing a Vision We are aware that we are operating in an interconnected world, where: isolation will no longer work; governance and capacity vary widely; increased involvement of stakeholders. © P. Tricorache

Conserving animals on the move for over 25 years Working Towards a Vision for 2020 Developing a Vision Our challenge is to: increase the relevance on the global diplomatic stage; overcome not just the tyranny of the commons but also the tyranny of borders (turf, policy, law, interest and the mind). © P. Tricorache

Conserving animals on the move for over 25 years Working Towards a Vision for 2020 Developing a Vision Progress can be made by: agreeing we have a shared vision and increasing our cooperation; supporting the kind of research we need; coordinating the input and output of our research and conservation programmes; fully utilising and promoting international mechanisms © P. Tricorache

Conserving animals on the move for over 25 years Working Towards a Vision for 2020 Developing a Vision Progress can also be made by recognising that: Partnerships are important; Governance can be shared; Extended our horizons (scientific and policy) to track progress. Conservation must be relevant. © P. Tricorache

Conserving animals on the move for over 25 years Working Towards a Vision for 2020 Developing a Vision Communicate what we know and what we need effectively; Evolve conservation ideas to meet our need; Species connectivity needs to translate into political connectivity; Traction and connection needs to be increased on the diplomatic stage. © P. Tricorache
