Math vocabulary By: Linda Sanchez

integer Any whole number and/or… inverse of a whole number

rational number an integer or a fraction.

scientific notation A method of writing or displaying numbers in terms of a decimal number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10

perfect square The product of a rational number multiplied by itself.

irrational number a real number that cannot be expressed as a rational number

real numbers any rational or irrational number.

Density Property It means we can always find a real number between any two real numbers.

Adjacent angles angles that have a common ray coming out of the vertex going between two

Coefficient A number or symbol multiplied with a variable or an unknown quantity in an algebraic term, as 4 in the term 4x, or x in the term x

Distance Formula the formula, which is used to find the distance between two points

Domain the set of values of the independent variable for which a function is defined

Hypotenuse the longest side of a right triangle, opposite the right angle.

Legs of a right Triangle The sides adjacent to the right angle.

Range The range of a set of numbers is the highest number minus the lowest number.

Slope The rise over the run

prism A solid geometric figure whose two end faces are similar, equal, and parallel rectilinear figures, and whose sides are parallelograms.

Scatter plot a graph made by plotting ordered pairs in a coordinate plane to show the correlation between two sets of data.

Slope intercept form A linear equation is an algebraic equation in which each term is either a constant or the product of a constant
