Lesson 1: Web Pages Web Browsers

Linear media & Hypermedia Books are presented in a linear format. Pages and chapters comprise a book. You can create your own strategy to viewing a book. For instance, you can read the last chapter first. Hypermedia is similar to a book format, but instead of turning the pages, you simply press a button to advance or go backwards.

Web pages There are millions of Web documents on the Internet. There are so many that no will be able to visit them all. Therefore, finding information can be difficult. This is where search engines come into play.

Browsers If you are enrolled in this class, chances are you have some experience with browsers. In fact, you are viewing this information from a browser. Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer are the two prevalent browsers. We will explore Internet Explorer because it is the most used.

Browsers Using your browser: Back: takes you to web pages previously viewed Forward: takes you to forward if you have gone too far backwards. It will also give you an option for History of the pages last visited.

Browsers Reload/Refresh: re-creates the page that you are on; however, it might be a cached page which a copy that has been saved on your local PC to speed up your Web interaction. To force a new copy of the actual page, use Shift+Reload (on the PC) or Option+Reload (on the Macintosh).

Browsers Home: a quick shortcut to get to the default page. Search: Specify a default search site such as one mentioned earlier for your browser sessions Stop: Stops the current action of the browser. Use stop if you feel you have waited long enough and want to search a different web page. Print: Prints the current document
