Animal Kingdom A WebQuest for 7th Grade Life Science Designed by N. Rhodes March 2008 Home Home Introduction Task Process EvaluationIntroductionTaskProcessEvaluation

Animal Kingdom Introduction We have just discovered that life exist on the planet Mars but we do not recognize any of the animals living there. They do, however, share many of the same characteristics with those belonging to the animal kingdom on Earth. You will be sent to Mars as part of a scientific team with the task of classifying these new organisms. Before you go, however, you must become an expert on the animal kingdom. There are seven major phyla that most animals are put into. You need to understand what makes each phyla unique as well as recognize those organisms belonging to that phyla. Click here for your top secret mission!! Home Home Introduction Task Process EvaluationIntroductionTaskProcessEvaluation

Animal Kingdom Your Mission It is your mission to understand the current classification of the animal kingdom. As the scientist being sent to Mars, you must develop a presentation to give to the other scientists on the mission that will prove you have the knowledge about our animal classification to accurately identify the new-found animals. In order to present your knowledge convincingly you must teach the scientists about one specific phylum. You must show that you recognize the characteristics that make that phylum unique. Home Home Introduction Task Process EvaluationIntroductionTaskProcessEvaluation

Animal Kingdom Task 1: Research the animal phylum given to your group. Use the websites provided to complete your animal phylum sheet. This will help you organize your information in order to present to other scientists. Task 2: Create a 5-slide PowerPoint presentation displaying the characteristics and examples of your animal phylum. Task 3: Complete the Animal phyla activity sheet while other scientists are presenting their information. Your Tasks What is your scientific group expected to accomplish? Animal Kingdom TASK 1 Use the following websites to gather information about your animal phylum (use only the websites that apply to your specific phylum): Cnidarians BrainPopReptiles BrainPopUnited Streaming Video from class (for everyone) (click the video segments tab and chose clip) log in and search for Biology: The Science of Life: The World of Animals Mollusks BrainPopThe Animal KingdomBiology of Porifera (for everyone) Sponges BrainPopSpongesThe Biology Of Annelids Invertebrates BrainPopEarthwormsBiology Of Arthropods Vertebrates BrainPopInsectsBiology Of Echinoderms Insects BrainPopMollusksBiology of chordates Spiders BrainPopEchinodermsAnimal Facts (for everyone) Arachnids BrainPopChordates Fish BrainPopClassification of Animals (for everyone) Process Home Home Introduction Task Process EvaluationIntroductionTaskProcessEvaluation Click the arrow to see task 1 (cont)

Using what you learned from your research, complete the animal phylum sheet provided. You may go back to the websites for more information (use the back arrow below.) Click the arrow to see task 2

Animal Kingdom Here are a list of steps you are expected to complete for your mission: TASK 2 Create a 5-slide PowerPoint displaying the characteristics and examples of your animal phylum. Use the following guidelines: Slide 1: Must include the name of the animal phylum you are researching and the names of the members in your group. Slide 2-4: List all of the characteristics and features that you have found regarding your animal phylum. Make sure that you have found all of the information required as well as other information you feel is important. Slide 5: Include at least 3 examples of members in your animal phylum. You must include both the names of the organisms as well as pictures of each on your slide. Animal Kingdom TASK 3 As other scientists present, fill in the Animal phyla activity sheet for your records. This sheet will assist you when you get to Mars. Process Home Home Introduction Task Process EvaluationIntroductionTaskProcessEvaluation

Animal Kingdom Evaluation This is how you will be evaluated: Activity0-3 points4-7 points8-10 pointsScore Completion of Activity Sheet -A large portion of activity sheet is incomplete, or -Activity sheet contains major errors -Activity sheet is complete, but contains errors, or -Part of the activity sheet is incomplete -Activity sheet is complete and accurate Characteristics and features of the animal phyla -Students fail to answer the required characteristic questions and students did not find other important information about the animal phyla. - Students have accurately answered all of the characteristic questions but have not found additional information about the animal phyla. -Students have accurately answered all of the characteristic questions and have found additional information about the animal phyla. Examples of the animal phyla -One or zero examples are given, or -Two or more examples are incorrect -Less than three examples are given, or -One or more example is incorrect -At least three correct examples Effort and Creativity -PowerPoint is not clear, not creative, and shows lack of effort. - PowerPoint is clear, but not creative, and shows lack of effort. -PowerPoint is clear, creative, and shows obvious effort Home Home Introduction Task Process EvaluationIntroductionTaskProcessEvaluation
