Addiction Prevention in Early Development Age (ages 6 to 10 years) Addiction Prevention Game:Day & Night

Programme History Concept and publisher: Red Cross Community Centre, Youth Committee Programme funding: the City of Rijeka Developed in: 2005

Workshops with Addiction Prevention Game DAY & NIGHT Brief description: Addiction prevention game called DAY & NIGHT is designed for preschool children and pupils of lower elementary. According to the concept of the DAY & NIGHT game, using addictive substances and absence of health represents the night, whereas health represents the day. Each square of the toy, which is made by folding the leaflet, contains an image supported by a suitable message and activity/game.

Programme Implementation As agreed with the leaders of Red Cross Youth (teachers and educators), older members organize visits to kindergartens and lower elementary classes during which they explain and play the game. Each visited group receives a set of flyers in a matching folder on which the game credo is printed out, along with the instructions and rules on how to play the game.

Target group: children in early development (ages 6 to10 years) Preventive activity method: didactic game Aims: developing and creating behaviour and attitudes that promote healthy lifestyle Activity leaders: educated young Red Cross volunteers

TEACHING PYRAMID LECTURE 5% READING 10% AUDIOVISUAL METHOD 20% DEMONSTRATION 30% DISCUSSION 50% PRACTICAL WORK 70% LEARNING FROM OTHERS 0% % = amount of acquired information given the working method

ROLE-PLAYING In role-playing a child assumes roles to act out various life situations. Every role-play is an opportunity for a child to explore his/her own possibilities and abilities in a safe way. Role-playing creates material for the activity leader, who can use it to raise awareness of healthy behaviour through discussion – while everyones having fun

TEACHING OTHERS By taking various roles, children become those who teach others. That enables them to become aware of the things they teach others - they practice what they preach. It is an efficient method of activating attention, increasing motivation and changing behaviour.

Holistic Approach to Health Health model is designed as a flower (taken from the Health Through Education curriculum) with five overlapping petals : - Physical health – how our body works - Mental health – how we think and learn - Emotional health – how we understand and express feelings - Social health – how we treat others - Personal health – how we see and perceive ourselves and a stem which is: - Spiritual health – our values, what is really important to us

SPIRITUAL MENTAL SOCIAL EMOTIONAL PERSONAL PHYSICAL

2 Night Statement: Alcohol leads to poverty. Activity: Think of what you would like to be (e.g. fireman, gardener, teacher) and mime it for the others to guess. 2 Day Statement: If you dont smoke, you run faster. Activity: Make a train – you are the engine, the others are carriages.
