Presentation transcript:

The following 4 slides show the effect of high key lighting on the face of the character and blacking out the background in the first 3!

2 motifs shown…. Television and clocks

Repeated effect. Different characters in the same pose. Forms a motif of sorts as it reminds us of previous scenes and similarities in the characters’ situations.

Backlighting. Highlights the silhouette of the character against a strong light. Effect is mystery and often fear.

Mirror and reflection motif. To make us think about similar situations, relate them to each other and compare them. Also t enable us to see two characters at the same time and/or reactions.

Two shots. Show relationships, points of view and reactions

Rose motif. Repeated throughout the film. (Scarlet Carsons – a pun on the Coronation Street actress Violet Carson)

Settings. How does the director explain, without using dialogue, exactly where the scene is being set?

Birds eye view and high angle shots. The effect is to make the character(s) involved appear small and vulnerable OR to give you an overall point of view or point of reference.

Then there is the extreme low angle or ‘worms eye view’ This heightens the effect of the low angle shot giving a sense of power.

Low angle and use of colour to help us connect with the Norsefire Party. Their symbol is used (the double cross – hmmmm) in both positive and negative images. (red on black and black on red) Note the low angles always used for Chancellor Sutler.

High key lighting on Valerie. The rest of the room is in shadow to indicate that she is the most important thing in the room. The high key lighting also emphasises her emotional response and puts her literally in the spotlight. The effect is to increase her vulnerability.

Close up of Delia searching in her safe for her journal. Lighting shows us that it is night and places a secretive tone on the shot. Blue lighting increases the effect – coldness and isolation.

Close up. The Archbishop’s gun. The director wants us in no doubt. We need to see this in order to assess the threat he poses.

Special effects. To focus our attention on what is happening. Events are slowed to extreme slow motion so that we can take time to appreciate the full effect on the characters and events.

The V motif. 2 examples. There are many, many more.

Tunnel motif. The tunnels add mystery, intrigue, uncertainty and a feeling that we are watching someone heading somewhere. Indeed we are. They also add to the idea of the underground and secrecy. Buried truths etc.

The idea of lighting and how it helps us to interpret mood and tone. Think about the effect of the following shots. Consider colours used as well.
