* Christmas then * Christmas now

The biggest happiness in the past was, when the family got together around the Christmas table. Before celebration the family did a big cleaning in the house. A week before Christmas carol singers appeared in the street to announce the approach of the festival.

They carried a Christmas crib with them and went from house to house performing the nativity play. It related the story of Christ’s birth and the appearance of three kings bringing presents to the son of god. Christ’s birth was very important in the past, the main event of the night was the midnight service in church. Girls and women prepared home-made candies and packed them in silk paper.

Nowadays most people decorate their house, their tree and sometimes their garden, too. It’s a big event, if the whole family can gather, because many people live in other countries, far from each other.

December 24th is Christmas Eve. The Christmas tree, a fir or pine, is decorated and children are given a lot of presents, for example: mobil phones, computers, tablets, iPads, board games and shopping vouchers.
