Presentation transcript:

How do poets use words and imagery to create MOOD in a text? Objective:. In this lesson you will learn how to identify the mood of a poem by analyzing the words an author uses.

Pair-Share…What do you think of when you hear the word “mood?” Where have you heard the word “mood” in your life before?

Key Word: Mood Mood: mood is a literary element that evokes certain feelings in readers through words and descriptions. Mood is also referred to as the atmosphere of a poem, because it creates an emotional situation that surrounds the reader.

Key Words (review) Imagery (the way an author uses words to help you to imagine something that you can see, hear, touch, taste, or sense) Images in a poem are the specific words or phrases used to comprise the imagery in a poem.

Focus Poem: “Abandoned Farmhouse” by Ted Kooser Learning Team Moment: With your team, figure out: Where have you heard the name,“Ted Kooser?”

First Steps to finding mood in a poem Step #1 Read aloud the poem, “Abandoned Farmhouse.” Listen for the way that the poet uses words.

Step #2 Read the poem a second time. Look for the words that convey strong feelings. Highlight the “strong feeling” words.

Step #3 Ask yourself, what kind of effect do these words have? How do these words make me feel? On the back of your worksheet, make a list of all of the feelings that come to your mind.

Team Share of Mood words Compare your list with your team. Which words were chosen by more than one team member? Which words are very similar? Choose two words that describe how you felt when you heard and read the poem. Write each word in one of the boxes on the graphic organizer.

Mood and Word Choice Using your graphic organizer, find the words and images in the text that made you feel each of the two specific moods of the poem which you have identified.

Mood Share and Compare Share your graphic organizer with a partner. See if your partner chose the same words and images that you have.

In the Mood to Practice Mood Listen as Mr. Cummings brings to you poetry texts in the form of song lyrics. He’ll be reinforcing the concepts about mood and helping you to practice them.

1 minute Remember… What are the steps that you use to find the mood of a poem?
