EURAMET Presentation for Research Connections 2009 Prague, May 7-8, What is metrology? Metrology is the science of measurement Metrological capability has been significant since historical times Metrological capability remains just as significant in the contemporary world Its a vital element of: Trade, product & process development, innovation, protection of the environment and improvement of health… Each county has a National Metrology Institute (NMI) to deliver & develop new capability

EURAMET Presentation for Research Connections 2009 Prague, May 7-8, Traditional areas of industry - becoming more complex - requiring broader measurement ranges and lower uncertainties New areas of technology e.g. nanotechnology, biotechnology etc Areas in which of metrology is increasingly recognised e.g. chemistry, clinical analysis, food safety Growing demand for Metrology National budgets unable to keep up Metrology Dilemma ? Huge potential for increasing efficiency and effectiveness via closer coordination & cooperation in R&D - MERA study 2003

EURAMET Presentation for Research Connections 2009 Prague, May 7-8, Potential for more NMI:NMI R&D collaboration NMI missions common Public good in areas of market failure Similar drivers Scientific comparisons international International System of Units only works when the research is internationally accepted All research projects Research projects suitable for collaboration Collaboration offers opportunities for more ambitious projects Projects with high national prestige Projects too close to market Project is nation specific (e.g. Defence or security) Project too small
