Active Schools Campaign Let's Move! WV is about putting children on the path to a healthy future.

Difference between Physical Education & Physical Activity Physical education is the foundation of a comprehensive school physical activity program-CSPAP-. It is an academic subject that uses a planned, sequential program of curricula and instruction, based on state and/or national physical education standards, which results in all students, including those with disabilities, developing the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to adopt and maintain a physically activity lifestyle. Physical education should be taught by state- certified physical education teachers.

Difference between Physical Education & Physical Activity Physical activity is bodily movement of any type and may include recreational, fitness and sport activities such as jumping rope, playing soccer, lifting weights, as well as daily activities such as walking to the store, taking the stairs or raking the leaves.

Let’s Move! WV is an initiative that has strong support from State Superintendent, Jorea Marple for grades Pre-K through Eighth that recommends schools accumulate an additional 15 minutes of daily physical activity. Jorea Marple High schools are encouraged to explore ways to add additional physical activity opportunities to the school day.

Why Physical Activity? produces health benefits may lead to academic benefits promotes a positive school climate

In 2008, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued physical activity guidelines for Americans, ages 6 and older. Recommendation was for children and adolescents to participate in 60 minutes or more of physical activity daily. The American Heart Association recommends that children and adolescents should do 60 minutes or more of physical activity daily and they participate in physical activities that are appropriate for their age and enjoyable. National Physical Activity Recommendations

Where do you fit in? It is suggested that the Resource Guide activities be introduced by the physical education teacher at the beginning of the school year. Your role is to be the “Physical Activity Director” for the school. After introduction of activities, the classroom teacher facilitates student participation in Let’s Move! WV-Active Schools with activities from the guide or from a resource of their choice.

No Time-Barrier cited most often by classroom teachers has been revised to remove time constraints Time is available for 15 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity in Pre-K through Grade Eight. *May be accumulated in 5 minute movement breaks* Key point-In addition to physical physical education education, recess and other physicalrecess activities

Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program The goal of a CSPAP is two-fold. Provide a variety of school-based physical activity opportunities that enable all students to participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. Provide coordination among the CSPAP components to maximize understanding, application, and practice of the knowledge and skills learned in physical education so that all students will be fully physically educated and well- equipped for a lifetime of physical activity.
