Unit 5 Week 1 Essential Question: How do you use the colon and semicolon correctly?

The two main purposes that semicolons serve: to join independent clauses that are closely related in thought and to prevent confusion when independent clauses or items in a series contain commas. Review: Semicolons

By definition, a horse is an animal that is more than 58 inches high at the highest point of the back ; anything less than this height is a pony. Example:

Horses’ markings include a blaze, a broad white mark down the face, a star, a white mark on the forehead, a sock, white on the leg extending from hoof to fetlock joint, and a stocking, a white leg extending from the hoof to the knee. Example:

Three purposes of a colon:  To introduce what follows: a list of items, a long formal statement or quotation  Between independent clauses when the second clause explains or restates the idea of the first  For conventional situations: between the hour and minute (7:05), after the salutation of a business letter (To Whom It May Concern:) Review: Colons

With your table partner, discuss the changes needed. Listen for the answer when the class discusses the corrections needed.

1. A horse has four natural gaits, the walk, trot, canter, and gallop. Where should commas be replaced by a semicolon or colon?

2. Both the walk and the trot are four-beat gaits, the gallop is a two beat gait, and the canter is a three- beat gait. Where should commas be replaced by a semicolon or colon?

3. Three Arabian horses are the ancestors of all thoroughbred horses, the Darley Arabian, which was sent to England in 1704 by Thomas Darley, the Byerley Turk, which was a colonel’s battle horse, and the Godolphin Arabian, a gift to the King of France. Where should commas be replaced by a semicolon or colon?

4. I like to ride early in the morning, at about 6,30 A.M. Where should commas be replaced by a semicolon or colon?

5. One man wrote this about the Shetland pony, “Some not so high as others prove to be the strongest....” Where should commas be replaced by a semicolon or colon?

On the half page you have received, mark the corrections needed. Review the notes you took, if needed. Independent Practice
