LUNAR PHASES

“Everybody is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody” -Mark Twain

CAN YOU SEE THE MAN IN THE MOON?

WHY DO WE ALWAYS SEE THE SAME SIDE OF THE MOON? THINK…PAIR…SHARE

ON THE MOON, 1 DAY = 1 YEAR 1 revolution around the Earth = 27.3 days 1 rotation of the moon on its axis = 27.3 days Since the moon rotates and revolves at the same exact time (synchronous rotation), we always see the same side of the moon from Earth. This is called  Tidal Locking

HALF OF THE MOON IS ALWAYS LIT UP BY THE SUN. AS THE MOON ORBITS EARTH, WE SEE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE LIGHTED AREA.

AS THE MOON REVOLVES, IT APPEARS TO CHANGE SHAPE IN THE SKY. The shape we see from Earth, depends on the different angles from which we see the lit part of the moon’s surface. These different shapes are called the “phases” of the moon

NEW MOON The lit side of the moon faces away from the Earth. The moon is directly in between the Sun and the Earth. The dark side of the moon faces Earth.

FIRST QUARTER MOON Approximately 1 week after the new moon, we can see the right half of the lit side of the moon. This will continue to grow until the full moon.

FULL MOON The entire lit side of the moon faces the Earth. The Earth, Sun and Moon are nearly in a straight line, with Earth in the middle. Occurs approximately 2 weeks after the new moon.

THIRD QUARTER MOON Three weeks after the new moon, we see the left half of the lit up moon. This will continue to shrink each day until another new moon.

VOCAB: Waxing: the lit up part of the moon is increasing, or growing larger. The light always appears on the RIGHT side of a waxing moon Waning: the lit up part of the moon is decreasing, or growing smaller. The light always appears on the LEFT side of a waning moon Crescent: Less than half of the visible moon is lit. Gibbous: More than half of the visible moon is lit.
