The Moon

 The revolution of the Moon around the Earth results in moon phases (changing appearances of the moon as seen from Earth).

 This is caused by the different angles from which we see the lighted part of the Moon's surface. These are called "phases" of the Moon.

 The Moon passes through four major shapes during a lunar cycle that repeats itself every 29.5 days.  The phases always follow one another in the same order: New moon First quarter Third quarter Full moon

PHASES OF THE MOON The phase you see depends on the relative positions of the moon, Earth, and the sun.

Day 0 - New Moon  Moon rises with sun.  Occurs when the moon is between the Earth and the sun.  The moon is in the sky but you cannot see it because the lighted half of the moon is facing the sun and the dark side faces the Earth.

New Moon

Waxing Crescent Moon  See in PM after sunset.  This Moon can be seen shortly after the New Moon, but before the First Quarter Moon.  More of the moon’s lighted side becomes visible. The crescent will grow larger and larger every day, until the Moon looks like the First Quarter Moon.

Waxing Crescent Moon Getting bigger: WAXING The RIGHT ½ of the moon is lit Less than ½ the moon showing: CRESCENT

Day 7 - First Quarter Moon  Rises at noon.  The right half of the Moon appears lighted and the left side of the Moon appears dark.  During the time between the New Moon and the First Quarter Moon, the part of the Moon that appears lighted gets larger and larger every day, and will continue to grow until the Full Moon.

First Quarter Moon One half of one half of the moon is visible.

Waxing Gibbous Moon  Rises late afternoon.  This Moon can be seen after the First Quarter Moon, but before the Full Moon.  More than one quarter of the moon can be seen.  The amount of the Moon that we can see will grow larger and larger every day.

Waxing Gibbous Moon GIBBOUS: more than half of the moon is visible.

Day 15 - Full Moon  Rises at sunset.  Occurs when all of the moon’s surface that faces Earth is lit up.  This means that the Earth, Sun, and Moon are nearly in a straight line, with the Earth in the middle.

Full Moon

Waning Gibbous Moon  Rises early evening.  This Moon can be seen after the Full Moon, but before the Last Quarter Moon.  The amount of the Moon’s lighted side that can be seen will grow smaller and smaller every day.

Waning Gibbous Moon Waning: getting smaller. Moon is lit on the LEFT side

Day 22 – Third (Last) Quarter Moon  Rises at midnight.  The left half of the Moon appears lighted, and the right side of the Moon appears dark.  During the time between the Full Moon and the Last Quarter Moon, the part of the Moon that appears lighted gets smaller and smaller every day. It will continue to shrink until the New Moon, when the cycle starts all over again.

Third Quarter Moon

Waning Crescent Moon  Rises early AM before sun.  This Moon can be seen after the Last Quarter Moon and before the New Moon.  The crescent will grow smaller and smaller every day, until the Moon looks like the New Moon.

What is a crescent moon? Less than half of the lighted side of the moon is visible. Waxing CrescentWaning Crescent

What have we learned from the Moon: By studying the phases of the moon, we’ve concluded that Earth and the moon are in motion around the sun. Earth’s shadow on the moon proved that Earth’s shape was spherical.
