GEO Task IN-05 Architecture Implementation Pilot, Phase 5 Kick-Off Agriculture SBA Session Summary UNEP Geneva 3-4 May 2012

Outline List of Attendees Summary of 3 presentations Scenario Development Work Plan Development

Attendees Liping Di, CSISS, George Mason University Stuart Frye, SGT/NASA Meixia Deng, CSISS/GMU Jochen Schmidt, NIWA Sneha Rao, CIESIN, Columbai University Tien-Yin Chou, GIS Center, Feng Chia University Lan-Kun Chung, GIS Center, Feng Chia University Eva Sevillano Marco, UAB Paula Díaz, CREAF Lucien Wald, MINES ParisTech Lucia Lovison, Afriterra Foundation Angel Palomares ATOS - ARI

Summary of three presentations GeoViQua – Eva Sevillano Marco –The man-made winter flood of rice fields in Spain to create temporary artificial wetland –Location, duration, and type of flood needed for government subsidy. Field survey to map the flood is very expensive –Earth observation data (Landsat ETM) are used to map the winter flood through the supervised and unsupervised classifications. PYXIS WorldView Client- Perry Peterson (video presentation) – –Shows how the client supports various GEOSS SBA scenario demos in the past AIPs NCPMS – Liping Di –Remote sensing based national crop condition and progress monitoring for entire U.S. Extensible for the whole globe –Provide both condition (up to daily at 250 meter resolution) and progress. –OGC service interfaces (WMS, WCS, WPS) for data and services

Scenario development Multiple scenario ideas were discussed but we didn’t have enough time to develop a complete scenario. –The most concrete one is the EO-based crop condition monitoring to support government decision making –Multiple sites (e.g., Sub-Sahara Africa, China-spring wheat, U.S.- Summer Corn) –Real-time tasking of EO-1 satellite by NASA for validation and detail situation analysis, Remote sensing-based 250 meter-resolution crop condition by GMU and CAAS(?), Crop, soil, population information provided by CIESIN, PYXIS client for visualization and demo. Integrate other contributions.. –Show ability to integrate multiple EO data and Social economic data for near real time monitoring to support decision making

Work Plan development Decide whether to establish Ag WG –Yes. Chair: Prof. Liping Di (GMU). Co-Chair to be selected. Engage w/GEO stakeholders, especially Ag SBA regarding requirements & problems Schedule and milestones for AIP-5 yet to be developed. Telecon is needed for coordinating the Ag SBA AIP-5 work –Bi-weekly or Monthly?
