EIONET Biodiversity NRC- European CHM network November 2012 Bulgarian Information system for BIOdiversity MONitoring (BioMon) Radoslav Stanchev Executive Environmental Agency

EIONET Biodiversity NRC- European CHM network November 2012 National Biodiversity Monitoring System (NBMS) - The NBMS was developed in 2007; - There are 953 species and habitats; - 29 methodologies for field monitoring; - From 2011 we developed Information system – we call it BIOMON with 5 software components. - They works in 30 governmental institutions as Regional Environmental Inspectorates (REIWs) and National and Natural Parks. They are the main data providers, but also for some biological groups or species the main data providers are NGOs (birds) and scientists (bats).

EIONET Biodiversity NRC- European CHM network November 2012 Type of information 1. Number of species by biological groups: Fungi – 16 species Mosses – 13 species Vascular plants – 194 species Invertebrates species Fish – 51 species Amphibians – 6 species Reptiles - 15 species Birds – 310 species Mammals – 31 species Habitats – 65 types under the Directive 92/43 2. Primary data – mainly comprehensive data from filed observations – differnet for each biological group or species for example for Brown bear (Ursus arctos) - Steps or marks from bear activitiy - Direct observations or DNA materials or for birds - Numbers of pairs, nests, colonies, winter counting's and etc. For plants - Coverage and numbers of vegetative of generative generations

EIONET Biodiversity NRC- European CHM network November 2012 Target audience 1. Local authorities – Regional Environmental Inspectorates, National and Natural Parks, Forestry. 2. National authorities – stakeholders and policy makers. 3. Public, NGOs, scientists and independent experts Coordination, development and maintains of the system On National level the Executive Environmental Agency is the governmental body which is involved in coordination, development and improvement of the system. On Regional level the institutions which coordinate the field monitoring and data collection are: Environmental Inspectorates, Natural and National Parks and Forestry.

EIONET Biodiversity NRC- European CHM network November 2012 Concept of the project (2009 – 2012) BG0052 Development of the Information system at the National Biodiversity Information system in Bulgaria (financed by EEA grants 2004 – 2009 from Norway, Island and Lichtenstein) Concept of the system - The main concept is to create an integrated Information system for collecting, analyzing and unify the primary data from conducted biodiversity monitoring in Bulgaria. - To assess the conservation status of the species on each level. - To help stakeholders and policymakers to take good decisions for protection and ruling biodiversity in Bulgaria Relation to policy The information system is directly related with policy as it is related with requirements of the Biodiversity Law, Directive 2009 / 147 and 92 / 43. The system provide to policy makers data for distribution, trends and state of the monitored species.

EIONET Biodiversity NRC- European CHM network November 2012 Components of the Information system 1.Biomon Mobile – GIS-GPS software – for gathering data on the field using GPS devices. Works on OS Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.5. Provide data to Biomon Regional database. 2. Regional Data Base (Biomon RDB) - Desktop application with free data base (SQL Compact DB) – unlimited numbers of Regional databases. 3. National Database (Biomon) – Desktop application which rules most of the functionalities of the system as : collection the data from all regional databases; creation of users on each level (regional, national or for Internet application); creation of different templates for gathering of primary data for each species; 4. Internet application for register users: Fill up data from field monitoring, Add data from paper sources (scientific articles, management plans, thesis and etc.) compare data from biodiversity monitoring with data from NATURA2000 sites (Standard data forms) 5. Internet application for public users:
