Alcott College Prep Civic Mission

What do we mean by Civic Mission? Alcott College Prep students and staff: 1. Show tolerance and respect 2. Appreciate our differences 3. Reject violence 4. Commit to finding a balance between our personal liberties and our social responsibility to others. 5. Make sure everyone feels like they belong to our community; value the voice of all members of our community equally. 6. Show that we value community and community involvement 7. Engage in respectful dialogue with those who hold different points of view (speak and listen and learn equally). 8. Actively learn about, discuss, and act on social issues and civic matters, issues, the news, etc. 9. Believe that a democracy is as good as what its people put into it – so we will continue to work and grow and improve our school by committing to the above stated dispositions.

Instruction: ❏ Civics and citizenship are addressed from multiple angles ❏ Civic learning and skills intentionally built into students’ experience for all four years ❏ Students develop a sense of agency as a member of a community ❏ Community partnerships / opportunities to form strong social bonds with adults ❏ Foster teamwork and collaboration ❏ STUDENTS TAKE INITIATIVE ❏ Public policy issues and current events discussed across content areas; Include content-related controversial issues; Simulations of political or legal situations
