Hunger and Eating Today’s objectives: -Students will be able to identify that people have basic physical needs. -Students will be able to discover there are universal, predictable consequences with need deprivation. -Students will be able to conclude that dieting for weight loss is a losing battle.

The 5 Basic Physical Needs  Water  Air  Food  Warmth  Sleep Deprivation: The state of being deprived. TO go without something or to have it missing.

Definitions  Deprivation: The state of being deprived. TO go without something or to have it missing.  Dehydration: Is what happens when a person does not have as much fluid as their body needs.  Metabolism: The rate at which your body uses energy.  Fad Diets: are eating plans that are trending. Meaning they come and go as celebrities or fashions do.

Sleep  What happens when you don’t get enough sleep one night?  Imagine you got three less hours of sleep each night for a week, for a month?  How would you feel? What can you predict would happen? What would happen if you were finally allowed to sleep as long as your wanted?

Thirst  Think about a time you were really thirsty, but you couldn’t have a drink right away?  What happens? What did you experience?  What if it was worse than this? What if someone told you that, no matter how thirsty you are, you could only have ½ the amount of liquid you wanted?  How would you feel?

Dehydration  Is what happens when a person does not have as much fluid as their body needs.  If you were dehydrated but finally could drink as much as you wanted, someone might ask “Why are you drinking so much?” How would you answer? What can you predict would happen when you were allowed to drink again?

THE AIR DIET You all have been breathing too much! You could benefit from the “Air Diet”. You know the latest style is to have a bluish tone to your skin, and your cheeks are just too rosy! Since oxygen is what gives your cheeks that rosy glow, you would be better looking if you cut back on your air so your face coloring would be more drab. Of course, you need some air to live. But surely you could cut back. And won’t it be worth it to have the “right look”?

Air Diet continued…  What were you thinking about when you were on your air diet?  Were you able to focus on what I was reading?  How did you feel when your air was limited?  How did you feel when you could breathe freely?

When our basic needs aren’t met…  All humans will respond in predictable ways when our needs aren’t met. After our discussion, what do you think the expected consequences are of need deprivation?

Expect these things to happen every time…  We persistently think about what is missing (sleep, water, air, warmth, food)  It is hard to concentrate or stay focused on anything else.  There is a powerful craving to satisfy the need.  Until satisfied, the craving is very uncomfortable.  When need is finally met, more than the normal amount is needed to make up for what was missing.

The Diet Dilemma  Considering all that we’ve spoken about what are some of the predictable things that would happen if we began to restrict or limit our food intake for weight loss?

Think about it…  Using what you’ve learned today, try to predict why diets aren’t an effective way to manage one’s weight?

Metabolism  The number of calories your body needs while at rest.  The rate at which your body uses energy.  More active individuals have a higher metabolism.

FAD DIETS Fad Diets are eating plans that are trending. Meaning they come and go as celebrities or fashions do. Usually require you to eat only certain food groups, buy certain products or have rules that seem strange and unusual. They also promise weight loss with little to no effort- meaning no physical activity.
