The Economic Impact of BRAC on the 11 Member Counties: Bridging the Gap for Economically Disadvantaged Populations Fayetteville State University (FSU) University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) Mr. Floyd Shorter, PI Dr. Assad Tavakoli, Co-PI

Regional Recommendations Strategies – The Feed the Troops Initiative – Education and Training Needs – Entrepreneurial Opportunities – Transportation Solutions

Feed the Troops Strategies – Collaborations among the farming population – Identify and submit competitive grants – Identify value added processing/services related to the regional food supply chain

Education and Training Strategies – Develop collaborations among counties that maximize each county’s comparative advantage with respect to training resources – Pool the resources of contiguous counties to expand broadband for educational and training purposes – Coordinate the resources of the Workforce Development Boards to address anticipated skill shortages

Entrepreneurship Strategies – Identify micro-funding intermediaries in each county – Identify microenterprise opportunities including those that may be launched through virtual marketplaces (e.g., etsy.com, foodzie.com) – Develop collaborations that capitalize on subcontracting opportunities – Employ the resources of regional institutions of Higher Education to strengthen counties with deficient entrepreneurial training programs

Transportation Strategies – Identify transportation brokers to coordinate travel among counties – Create transportation centers within One Stop Career Centers – Establish central pick up centers manned by volunteers paid on a per mile basis
