Start the story of qualitative analysis in the 12th century with a gentle man called Fibonacci. Then move to Malthus, Darwin, Lotka and Volterra then get into the nitty gritty of qualitative modelling Ecospace Beth Fulton 2012

Ecospace Builds on Ecopath and Ecosim Spatial version Regular grid ECOSIM on each cell movement along gradients across cell (weighted by preferred habit) Once defined go to ‘Run Ecospace’ and press ‘Run’ output is spatial distribution of groups through time and overall Ecosim result ECOPATH, ECOSIM and ECOSPACE

Ecospace Replicates Ecosim dynamics in each cell Links cells through dispersal of organisms and effort allocation (and advection option) Equal m’s (symmetrical mixing, except at shores or when toward preferred habitats) mi,j+1Bij Bij ECOPATH, ECOSIM and ECOSPACE

Ecospace Basemap (can be from GIS) define rows and columns select habitat type and draw it on draw on protected zones define areas of differing relative primary productivity all done by selecting different option on sheet and then drawing in shape with cursor loading GIS maps gets easier ECOPATH, ECOSIM and ECOSPACE

Ecospace Basemap (can be from GIS)

Ecospace - Habitats Habitats – define by clinking on habitats icon Represents habitat ‘preferences’ by differential dispersal, feeding and predation rates

Ecospace - Habitats Association of groups to habitats identify habitats fisheries can access ECOPATH, ECOSIM and ECOSPACE ECOPATH, ECOSIM and ECOSPACE

Ecospace - Map Accounts for spatial variation in productivity and cost of fishing (paint or load)

Ecospace - Advection Advection = slab hydrodynamic flows (per month) load or draw on wind, upwelling, MLD and “Calculate” Physical oceanographers can even add one of their favorite processes.

Ecospace - Movement Include dispersal

Ecospace - Migration Migration centre point specified per month per species

Ecospace - Run Once defined go to ‘Run Ecospace’ and press ‘Run’ output is spatial distribution of groups through time and overall Ecosim result

Ecospace – Extras Ecoseed = spatial optimisation of MPA size & location Evaluates one seed cell for each run “Best” seed cell is selected as an MPA cell Adjacent cells become seed cells Process continues until all cells are MPAs ECOPATH, ECOSIM and ECOSPACE

Ecospace - Example Marine protected area effects

Thank you Explain why important - what has climate change shown as already? Fisheries is streets ahead in thinking about co-management, adaptive management and tools to support that.
