Australian National Curriculum General Capability Literacy

Literacy and Students As students become literate they develop the skills to:  Learn and communicate,  Become effective individuals,  Participate as members of a society.

Literacy and Staff The progressive development of literacy knowledge and skills is essential for success in all learning areas and is the responsibility of all teachers. It is important that teachers across all years of schooling and learning areas develop student understanding of the specific language and literacy demands of the various learning areas.  The Australian curriculum p10

The Australian Curriculum Rationale  Literacy is central to all learning in school and the ways that students demonstrate their learning. Students need to draw on increasingly complex and sophisticated literacy knowledge and skills to understand and engage with content across the curriculum.  Some aspects of literacy are most often encountered within a particular learning area.

This means that:  teachers need a clear understanding of and vocabulary for the literacy demands specific to their learning area.  students need explicit and systematic literacy teaching in that learning area.

What is the difference between English and Literacy?  English is a discreet discipline  Literacy deals with the deconstruction of texts across all curriculums

While the primary development of Literacy will reside in English, the development of this capability across the curriculum is essential to effective teaching and learning. P10 the Australian Curriculum

Cross Curricular Priorities  Australian National Curriculum General Capabilities include Literacy.  Literacy needs to work on a continuum.  Students will need to reach the standard to progress further.  The standard for literacy will be assessed at the ends of years 2, 4. 6, 8 and 10.

How will it be assessed? Teachers are expected to teach and assess general capabilities as they are incorporated within each learning area curriculum. State and territory curriculum and school authorities will determine the extent to which student learning of the general capabilities will be assessed and reported.
