Literacy and Students As students become literate they develop the skills to:  Learn and communicate,  Become effective individuals,  Participate as members of a society.

Literacy and Staff The progressive development of literacy knowledge and skills is essential for success in all learning areas and is the responsibility of all teachers. The Australian Curriculum Rationale  Literacy is central to all learning in school and the ways that students demonstrate their learning. Students need to draw on increasingly complex and sophisticated literacy knowledge and skills to understand and engage with content across the curriculum.  Some aspects of literacy are most often encountered within a particular learning area.

This means that:  teachers need a clear understanding of and vocabulary for the literacy demands specific to their learning area.  students need explicit and systematic literacy teaching in that learning area.

Cross Curricular Priorities  Australian National Curriculum General Capabilities include Literacy.  Literacy needs to work on a continuum.  Students will need to reach the standard to progress further.  The standard for literacy will be assessed at the ends of years 2, 4. 6, 8 and 10.

How will it be assessed? Teachers are expected to teach and assess general capabilities as they are incorporated within each learning area curriculum. State and territory curriculum and school authorities will determine the extent to which student learning of the general capabilities will be assessed and reported. Examples of how literacy can be taught and assessed in different Learning Areas

Literacy and Mathematics  Understanding written problems and instructions.  Including the use of common words with specific meaning in a mathematical context.  Understanding metaphorical language used to express mathematics concepts and processes.

Literacy and Science  Discussing phenomena  Hypothesising about speculative ideas  Sharing findings through a variety of genres with specific language features: e.g. procedural report, explanation, using technical language.
