Public/Private Partnerships in Neuroscience and The George & Ann Ryan Neuroscience Institute

Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program Neuroscience Understanding the mysteries of the brain and the nervous system— is a top priority From seeking cures for neurodegenerative and neurological diseases and disorders to addressing mental illness, drug addiction, and substance abuse and developing effective treatments for brain injuries… neuroscience has emerged as a compelling scientific & medical frontier

Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program Neuroscience accounting, finance, management, marketing, and supply chain management require the science of decision-making the study of business decision-making has slowly begun to mold itself to the study of neuroscience (or, more specifically, neuroeconomics) With mouse-click data in marketing and tick-by-tick transaction data from the financial markets it is now practical and competitive to study the extent to which emotion contributes to the assessment of subjective value

Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program What is Alzheimer’s Disease? Most common form of dementia 5 million are living with the disease in the US (1 in 9 over 65) 36 million globally 95% are sporadic; late onset (LOAD) 5% are genetic; early onset before age 60 (EOAD) 6th leading cause of death No known cure Modified from: _11_01_archive.htmlhttp://southernbourbonmountains.blogspot.com

Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program Percentage Changes in Selected Causes of Death Cause of Death Alzheimer’s Disease StrokeProstate Cancer Breast Cancer Heart Disease HIV (Alzheimer’s Association, 2013 Alzheimers Dement) 500,000 may die each year, making AD the THIRD leading cause of death. Rush University Medical Center, March, 2014

Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program Projected number of people above 65 with AD

Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program VISION: Make Rhode Island the Leading State in Neuroscience Research Connect URI, Lifespan, RIH and Brown to form an effective network that makes neuroscience the major focus of biomedical research in RI Seek private and federal funding to establish a continuum of research from the bench to the bedside Complement URI’s strength (drug discovery, engineering, and psychology) with Brown’s established neuroscience program and the clinical capability of RIH and Lifespan Offer solutions for neurodegenerative diseases and CNS disorders

Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program The George & Ann Ryan Neuroscience Institute The George & Anne Ryan Institute for Neuroscience— Established November 14, 2013 by Tom and Cathy Ryan with their generous gift of $15 million dollars, the single largest charitable gift in the University of Rhode Island’s

Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program Rhode Island Neuroscience Collaborative (RINC) An enterprise developed by the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program at URI, the Brown Institute for Brain Science and the Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute to encourage and support new inter-institutional research collaborations in the neurosciences In June 2014 five projects that showed promise were funded through RINC and other processes Each project is led by one Co-Principal Investigator from URI and one Co- Principal Investigator from Brown/RIH
