Combining Like Terms

Only combine terms that are exactly the same!! Whats the same mean? –If numbers have a variable, then you can combine only ones that have the same variable –You can also combine numbers that have no variables

Vocabulary Simplify Rewrite an expression as simply as possible. Reducing to lowest terms.

5 pillows + 3 pillows 8 pillows

5a + 3a 8a

8c - 3c 5c

5 cats + 3 dogs

Examples Which terms are the same or like terms? 5x, 8y, 9z, 10, 12x, 14z, 7 Same: 5x and 12x Same: 10 and 7 Same: 9z and 14z

12r – 8 – 12

12r –8 –12 12r –8 –12 12r – 20

Lets try it! 4x + 9x 13x -7y + 9y 2y -8y + (-4y) -12y 4x + 8y + 10x 14x + 8 y 5 + 8x + 7y x + 7y + 15

We can only add and subtract like terms

Practice Problems: 1.4x + 5y – 2x + 3y 2.5x - 3y) + 2x + y x – 4y + 2y – 8x 4.(-13) + (-2y) + (-7) – 4y 5. 16x – 3y - 4y – 3x
