Introduction to GIS

» Should the census collect racial data at all?

» Hispanic or Latino asked before race (in 1990 asked after race question) » Respondents could select more than one race (in 1990 could only select one Hispanic origin and one race response) » American Indian and Alaska Native combined (in 1990 they were separate) » Asian and Pacific Islander category split (was one category in 1990)

» More and improved information on racial and ethnic diversity » Census 2000 race data are not directly comparable with data from 1990 and previous censuses

IF ONLY ONE CATEGORY IS SELECTED… 1.White 2.Black or African American 3.American Indian and Alaska Native 4.Asian 5.Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander 6.Some other race

» Race alone ˃Respondents who reported only one race » Race in combination ˃Respondents who reported two or more races » Race alone or in combination ˃Respondents who reported one race, plus ˃those who reported that race in combination with at least one other race

» 7 mutually exclusive racial categories ˃White alone ˃Black or African American alone ˃American Indian & Alaska Native alone ˃Asian alone ˃Native Hawaiian & Other Pacific Islander alone ˃Some other race alone ˃Two or more races (57) » Hispanic or Latino ˃White alone, not Hispanic or Latino

˃ 6 Race alone categories ˃+15 Categories of 2 races ˃+20 Categories of 3 races ˃+15 Categories of 4 races ˃+ 6 Categories of 5 races ˃+ 1 Category of 6 races » 63 possible combinations

» In some tabulations, race data will be shown for 63 categories » In other tabulations race will be collapsed and shown as ˃Race alone categories ˃A two or more races category ˃Race alone or in combination with one or more races » Data for Hispanic/Latino in many tables

» Respondents providing write-in entries, such as, multiracial, mixed, interracial, or a Hispanic or Latino group are included in the “Some Other Race” category » In Census 2000 about 43 percent of Hispanics or Latinos classified themselves as “Some Other Race” » In Census 2000, 97 percent of the people who reported as “Some Other Race” were Hispanic or Latino.

» The six race alone groups and the two or more races group, when combined, sum to 100 percent of the population 100% population
