Symbolic Retribution means that your punishment depends on the sins you committed in life. Slide 4

What are the Opportunists punishments?

They must chase an ever- changing banner while being stung by wasps and hornets and feed the maggots and worms around their feet. Slide 4

Direct characterization – writer tells what a character is like. Indirect characterization – writer suggests what a character is like by showing what the character says and does, what other characters say about him or her, or how other characters behave toward him or her. Slide 4

Minos is the hideous monster that blocks the way to the other circles of Hell. His job is to judge the damned and assign them to their eternal torture. Slide 4

What did the Souls of the Carnal do sinful in life and how are they punished in Hell?

They put passion ahead of reasoning and the love of God. They are punished by being swept forever in a pitch black whirlwind of Hell. Slide 4

These sinners have committed the harshest of all sins – they are Traitors to their Benefactors. Their punishment is to be stuck eternally in a twisted and contorted position within the ice. They are unable to speak. Slide 4

What is Cocytus?

Cocytus is the final river in Hell and is known as the river of wailing. Slide 4

How can you describe Satan? Why is he in Hell?

Satan is stuck in the center of the ice where all of the rivers of guilt meet. He has huge wings that are continuously beating in an attempt to escape, however, this action only freezes him deeper into the ice. He is unable to speak. Satan wanted to be more powerful and have more control than God, so he was sent to Hell for eternity. His punishment symbolizes the loss of control that he wanted so badly in life. Slide 4
