What day is the 5 th November?

On the 5 th November 1605, Guy Fawkes was discovered under the House of Commons with several barrels of gunpowder. He was preparing to blow up the building on the opening of parliament that day. Since that day the fact that he didn’t manage to blow up the government has been celebrated on the 5 th November with fireworks and bonfires. How many years ago was Guy Fawkes discovered? = 409

Here are some other interesting dates. Can you work out how many years ago these things happened? Every year Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the 4 th Thursday in November in memory of the first successful harvest the pilgrims had after they arrived on the continent. The first thanksgiving was in On the 4 th November 1843 the statue of Lord Nelson was put on top of Nelson’s column in Trafalgar Square, London where it still stands today. On the 17 th November 1558, Queen Mary (Tudor) died. She was England’s first ruling queen and daughter of Henry VIII. Ready for the answers?

The first thanksgiving in 1621 was 393 years ago. Nelson’s column was built 171 years ago in Queen Mary I died 456 years ago in 1558.

Just a final thought… …are these magic or maths? Think of a number. Double it. Add 10. Halve it. Take away your original number. Is your answer 5? Write down your age. Multiply it by 1/5 of 100. Add on 10. Multiply by 20% of 25. Now add on your shoe size (if it's a half size round to a whole number). Finally subtract 50. What is your final answer? The first two digits should be your age and the last two your shoe size.
