ET 493 Instructor: Dr. Koutsougeras By Rhett Falcone and Scott Dauzat Advised by Dr. Mitra

 Design a safe portable ATV lift  Easy for one person to handle  Lightweight and disassembles for transport  Lifts from frame allowing access to underside of ATV  No electricity required

 Frame to be constructed of 4 x 4 x 1/8 in aluminum  Stress analysis to be performed to verify the beams will support the load  Top beam will be detachable for transport  Lifting arms will be made of steel due to the highest stress factor  Maximum lifting capacity of 1000 lbs.  Winch must have a brake so that the load will not fall when not turning  Cable size and tension will be determined to support the load  Pins placed under lifting arms for safety in case of cable failure

Ramp Lift (discountramps.com)

 Hydraulic/Scissor Lift  Limited lift height  No access to underside of ATV  Ramp Lift  Does not lift the weight off the tires.  May drive off the ramp  Limited working area underneath the ATV  Not portable

 Portable and Lightweight  No electricity required  One man operated  Access to Underside of ATV  Tires can be removed while ATV is Lifted  Support arms lift from the frame

 Safety  Lowering of ATV must be slow and controlled  Keeping weight to a minimum  Maintain strength after many uses  Minimizing cost

 Stops turning when cranking is stopped  No free mode  Split drum allows cable to be pulled from opposite directions (etrailer.com)

 February 20, 2013: Came up with ATV lift idea.  February 27, 2013: Determined the design of the ATV lift and discussed components to be used.  March 5, 2013: Discussed pulley system and winch selection.  March 13, 2013: Created the outer frame in COMSOL and decided on the winch and cable to be used.  March 27, 2013: Informed the project had to be completed in one semester as opposed to two semesters, so the actual lift will not be built, only analyzed.  April 3, 2013: Interim proposal and presentation prepared which is due April 9th,  April 9, 2013: Deliver presentation and interim proposal.  April 23, 2013: Have complete analysis of ATV lift, including stress analysis using COMSOL.  May 1, 2013: Have final report and presentation complete.
