Project Goals Determine the currency and accuracy of forest cover data in several VFR districts. SIFD chosen as pilot audit district. Determine the usefulness of the current automated change detection process for audit and update purposes

Team/Resources Collaboration between –South Island Forest District –Vancouver Forest Region LIM –Resources Inventory Branch

Change Detection Process Acquired Landsat imagery from 1990 and 1999 Software detects the differences in the imagery as disturbances and captures their shapes For any errors on the forest cover maps the corresponding timber volumes would be calculated from the database and added or subtracted as the case may be to provide a total error volume

Automated Change Detection Polygons Detected new cutblocks OK Old or small cutblocks - partial detection or not at all Also detected water, snow and shadows on steep slopes 18 meter Landsat 7 imagery

Disturbance Omission Disturbance never captured on FC1 18 meter Landsat 7 imagery

Disturbance Omission Disturbance never captured on FC1 1 meter Ortho Image

Disturbance Commission Blocks captured on FC1 Blocks never harvested 18 meter Landsat 7 imagery

Disturbance Commission Blocks captured on FC1 Blocks never harvested 5 meter IRS imagery

Misplaced Disturbance Correct size and shape Incorrect position 18 meter Landsat 7 imagery

Misplaced Disturbance Correct size and shape Incorrect position 5 meter IRS imagery

Misshapen Disturbance Incorrect shape 18 meter Landsat 7 imagery

Misshapen Disturbance Incorrect shape 5 meter IRS imagery

SIFD Audit Results and Conclusions Only 5 omitted 2 committed disturbances Many misshapen disturbances due to low accuracy methods of transfer previously used No compilation of volumes yet High accuracy methods(+/- 20 meters) now used: monorestitution from air photos, transfer of GPS digital files, and digital transfer from orthophotos or satellite imagery The change detection software used was not helpful. New software appears more promising for audit and update
