UNICEF Presentation by: Amandla K. Stanley

UNICEF was originally known as the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund.

UNICEF is now known as the United Nations Children Fund.

UNICEF was founded in December 1946 after World War II.

The whole World, especially children were in need of assistance.

UNICEF provides Aid without Discrimination

Providing Penicillin was one of their accomplishments

In the 1950s the World Health Organization (WHO) recognized that Sub-Saharan Africa and India had among the highest rates of Tuberculosis across the World.

UNICEF believes that Children’s healthcare begins with maternal care.

Clean Water is also critical

Clean Water 2012

Mo Money Mo Problems!

As a sub group of the United Nations their records are public

Fundraising has been critical for their operation since the 1950s

These Fundraisers still exist today!

UNICEF has several partnerships, many are corporate and on the International Level

Some corporate sponsorships create controversy

“I was not made cheery this morning when at the grocery store, I found UNICEF’s name and logo plastered all over the packages of Halloween candy.” -Professor Amir Attaran of the Law and Medicine Faculties at the University of Ottawa

Nobel Peace Prize?

Not Quite… “A good deal of the controversy surrounding UNICEF comes primarily and directly from [their] policy of supplying and distributing contraceptives. Many contraceptives are, in reality, abortifacients.”

My Opinion of UNICEF As in Biology…. Structure fits function… Change occurs over time! This is most important!

Handwashing with water alone is not sufficient to destroy many disease-causing pathogens, including those causing diarrhoea and pneumonia, two leading killers of children.
