Safe Science Having a Safe Attitude

Why is Safety Important Safety hazards exist in any laboratory. Must be aware and take precautions to reduce risks of an accident. You can avoid accidents if you understand how to use equipment and materials and follow procedures properly.

Specific Safety Hazards Follow specific instructions to use materials and equipment safely.

Chemicals Chemicals used in this course are dangerous. Follow all rules to avoid accidents. 9 points – pg. 601

Heat Sources Use caution when using heat sources, and never leave them unattended. Sources of heat: Bunsen burner, hot plates and light bulbs. 9 points - pg. 601

Glass and Sharp Objects All glass ware must be handled with care, breakage creates sharp edges and splinters. 8 points – pg

Electricity and Light Electric and lights source can give electric shocks. All devices should be properly grounded. 9 points – pg. 602

Living things Living Things need to be respected and not mistreated. During dissection, only complete the requested procedures. Body fluids must be cleaned up and may carry diseases. 4 points – pg. 602

Accidents Can Happen Be sure to notify your teacher if an accident should occur. Cuts, chemical spills, burns or electrical accident are a few examples. 5 points – pg. 602

Safety Conventions and Symbols Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Symbols. –Compressed gas, dangerously reactive material, oxidizing material, corrosive material, biohazardous infectious material, Flammable and combustible material, poisonous and infectious material (serious toxic or toxic effects)

Hazardous Household Product Symbols (HHPS) –Type of Danger: Explosive, Corrosive, Flammable, and Poisonous –What Poses the Danger: Contents or Container
