 People all over the world spend countless hours listening to music  30 Million people in the US play musical instruments regularly Where do you hear music on a regular basis? Is all of that music the same? Is the purpose or reason for the music the same?

What does it mean?  The Fine Arts are also known as the performing and visual arts…does this give you a hint?  Here is another Hint: The fine arts are created primarily for aesthetics and Intellectual purpose. In simple words…..to make you think and feel! Can you name them?

Historically the “Fine Arts” generally referred to…  Painting/Drawing  Sculpture  Architecture  Music  Poetry  Drama  Dance Today, even Film Making and Photography are considered “Fine Arts” as well as many others.

 Music specifically is considered a fine art because it can makes us … THINK and FEEL › Music can be interesting and satisfying

 The “Fine Arts” are what make us human!  They help make the difference between “LIVING” and just “EXISTING”. What does this mean? Humans live. We think and feel! Animals just exist. The “Fine Arts” help us to live and enjoy life!

 What is culture?  Music is created by people, for people  Music is a part of a humans culture  What are some similar characteristics between music of different cultures? Think about celebrations, funerals, worship, soothing a child… What type of music do you associate with your culture? Think about your age, your family heritage, where you live….

 Listening is different than hearing- Listening requires STRONG CONCENTRATION  Some music requires undivided attention  Everyday music fulfills its function without being listened to carefully What are some examples of music you LISTEN to? What are some examples of music you HEAR?

 You should know something about a piece of music before you decide you don’t like it. Why?  Often, music that offers the greatest rewards are those that need time to get to know!
