Previous history A lot of English people feeling that the Church had not completed the task begun by the Reformation wanted to leave England They sailed to Amsterdam in Holland to escape what they saw as religious persecution They stayed twelve years near Leiden (Netherlands), but by 1617 they thought it was the best to move to the new world

Arrival in America In a storm in autumn, the Mayflower arrived after two months at the American coast As they realized that they had to do a long voyage to reach their initial goal, the Pilgrims changed the original plan So they stayed at the American coast They lived there with their own rules
