War Posters.. Creative art or Subliminal Messages?

Propaganda " the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person."

Answer the following questions. What is your immediate reaction to this piece?

What emotions does it bring forth to you?

What country or organization created this document?

What colors are mainly used? Why were they used?

Describe any symbols used?

. What is the main message of the poster?

. How does this poster bring out the message using symbols, colors, and words?

. What action does the creator want you the reader to take?

. Is this a good piece of propaganda? Does it get its message across?

What the heck!!! Now I really am confused.

Ok, lets take it one step at a time. Put your self in the position as a person viewing the poster for the very first time during the 1940’s.

Ask yourself: What is your immediate reaction? Feelings? Emotions?

The number of casualties from gas was huge. The cost of teaching these soldiers the skills to survive had to be just as big.

Soldiers can't be soldiers if they are blind. So its obvious they were "blinded" in combat.

Ask yourself: Do we see any phrases or slogans? And, did it do a good job?

Congratulations you have just completed your first analysis. Get with your partner. Use the handout and decode the following posters.
