The Full Power of 3D Subsurface Design Saves Money for Owners and Contractors Presented by: Kristi Shinall, Parsons; Jennifer Hall, P.E., Parsons; Kimo Pickering, Kiewit Contributor: T. Patrick Cowley, P.E., Traffic Operations Engineer, Utah Department Of Transportation, Region Two July 20, 2015 Boise, ID

Why is 3D design important? Top five causes of construction delays(1): Unforeseen utilities Differing site conditions Permitting Weather Errors in plans and specifications (1) Avoiding Delays During the Construction Phase of Highway Projects, NCHRP 20-24(12)

Common Practice A utility is considered to be in 3D by assigning an elevation. Typical depth Typical depths apply typically, but what happens when there are other utilities? Storm drain Ductbank Water line

Project Example SR-114 Geneva Road Widening Project in Utah County 3D Modeling used: Partially Post Project Take Aways: Utility Issues: 8 Approximate Cost: $390,000 3D Full Power: Number of conflicts: 4 Approximate Cost savings: $240,000

Can we do better? The short answer is YES!!! Let’s start with workflows. 5

How is this accomplished? Early Identification: SUE Pothole and Survey 2. Design software: AutoCAD Civil 3D MicroStation with InRoads Early identification also includes using location services. We use this software, but we are encouraging using the full capabilities of the tools. 6

Example: Locating conflicts using Clash Detection Water with duct bank We have worked in both platforms. However, the clash detection tool within MicroStation , is what we have the most experience with. This is simply an example of what it can show. Hard clash Fiber with underdrain Duct bank with underdrain Soft clash 7

Best Practices 3D modeling integrates the work of all disciplines so no one discipline is designing in a vacuum 3D models can be linked directly to construction schedules to help visualize construction sequencing Minimize risk, improve accuracy of quantities and optimize design **UDOT has a philosophy of early and often. Each project is evaluated to determine if it is advantageous to complete SUE prior to starting design. A direct result of this philosophy is the implementation of a Best Management Practice where SUE is provided upfront for Design-Build projects. 8

Take Aways Assess feasibility of 3D Modeling Implement a plan of action Coordinate, Cooperate, and Communicate(2) Partnership between Designers, Contractors, and Owners Determine whether TRUE 3D modeling is feasible for your project. (Is investing time and effort on the front end going to help your project to be successful on the back end?) Create a plan (develop a mindset)…think about what you need to make the plan work. A successful project fosters coordination, cooperation through continuous communication. (This Create a partnership between designers, contractors and owners. To use the full power of 3D subsurface design to save owners and contractors money.
