Presentation SUB Prof. Dr. Elmar Mittler EMANI – Project Meeting February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 Springer-Verlag Heidelberg Göttingen State and University Library (SUB)

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen General  founded in 1734, one of the biggest libraries in Germany  subscribes to about 16,000 journals and serials  library’s special collections contain more than 210,000 maps, 12,000 manuscripts, and 3,000 incunabula  1999: more than 160,000 interlibrary loans

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen...  National Library for the German 18 th century printing  in Germany responsible for several special subject collections, also for Mathematical Sciences  production of digital documents (e.g. Gutenberg Bible,  Göttinger Digitization Center (GDZ)  projects at SUB

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen GDZ  Establishing Service Centers for the Retrospective Digitization of Library Material in Germany - this service center shall serve as starting points for a common development of all German libraries in consideration of the technical conception and the creation of the decentralized digital library with regard to international experiences.

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen DigiZeitschriften  SSG -Digitization of Periodicals - digitization of research-relevant journals of various subjects. The first step is the presentation of some sixty digitized top german journals with ca 3 million pages

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen DIEPER  Digitised European Periodicals - to build a virtual network and a central access point to make accessible periodicals that have been retrospectively digitised in Europe or anywhere else in the world

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen ERAM  Annuals Project - the aim of this project is to set up a full-text database of mathematical texts relevant for research purposes. Access and indexing are performed by means of a database which has been built up according to the "Annual about the Progress in Mathematics" ( )

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen MathGuide / Renardus  Quality-controlled Subject Gateways  MathGuide -(besides 5 other Subject Gateways)  Renardus -EU project with several relevant collections in Mathematics, planned: full-text harvesting

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen EULER  European Libraries and Electronic Resources in Mathematical Sciences  EULER: Offers a "one-stop shopping site" for users interested in Mathematics including bibliographic databases, library online public access catalogues, electronic journals from academic publishers, online archives of preprints and grey literature, indexes of mathematical Internet resources.  Euler-Takeup: upgrade the existing EULER prototype

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen Virtual Mathematics Library of Monographs  NSF-DFG Project - Cornell - Michigan - Göttingen -

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen Math-Bib-Net - to maximize the integrative access to mathematical literature, a collaborative work of departments of mathematics and university libraries has started which focus on: co-ordinated supply of mathematical internet sources, unitary/common search engines for the institutional holdings, SDI services, archiving and cataloging scholarly relevant parts of holdings, etc.

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen International Archive of Mathematiciens  Cataloging of Literary Remains of Mathematicians - a co-operative venture of the academy of sciences at Göttingen and the SUB

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen Meeting of Frontiers  Digitizing of the Rare Books, Maps, and Manuscripts Pertaining to the Exploration of Siberia and the North Polar Region from the Asch Collection - digitize selected, poorly-known materials (cooperative efforts of the Library of Congress's Russian-American multi-media digital library project “Meeting of Frontiers”) and provide access to digital versions of rare books, photographs, maps, and of other materials

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen ProPrint  Printing on Demand - to unite the document servers of Humboldt Univ. and SUB and to establish a printing on demand service for the users. The user can choose several documents or parts of them from both servers and collect them together to a new document which is then printed by a professional printing office

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen CARMEN  Content Analysis, Retrieval and Metadata: Effective Networking - AP2/5 - Metadata for Terms and Conditions and for Archiving: The goal is to collect, process, and set up authority files for concepts, definitions, and examples of metadata concerning archiving and recognition, and for administration of digital rights issues (including the handling of complex documents, the checking of access rights, transparency of copyright, and the authentication and archiving of digital materials)

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen Electronic Library of Psychology - Conversion of a psychology textbook collection into digital form (SUB and the Hogrefe-publishing house). The goal is to collect experience and knowledge in the sphere of electronic media preparation and presentation as well as knowledge of user behavior (more than forty textbooks and standard works in psychology). The books are offered through the SUB's home page in PDF format

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen Experiences  Ongoing Archiving Projects (Hans Becker) : PADI, OCLC/RLG, CAMiLEON, A.W.MELLON Foundations E-Journal Archiving Program …  Format (Thomas Fischer)  Metadata and other Standards (Alexander Huber & Heike Neuroth)  Archiving Techniques (Frank Klaproth)

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen Format  The file format chosen should be readable without the use of specialized programs  The file format should be robust against damage of media and loss of data

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen Types of Text Format  Mark-up languages like XML or TeX store text and formatting together. Text can be reconstructed using any text editor, format probably regained  Structured formats like MS Word or PDF need the dedicated program for proper representation and may or may not allow the extraction of the text contained, depending on the particular situation, usually not visible to the user Consequence: Mark-up formats are better suited for archiving

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen Metadata for Archiving & Terms and Conditions  Based on experiences from the CARMEN project WP 2/5 (Springer Verlag, TU Muenchen, SUB Göttingen)  Focus on international standards and interoperability of systems and data models:  Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS)  Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI)

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen... Focal objectives include:  analysis of current developments in the field of metadata for long term archiving and terms and conditions  establishment of functional requirements for preservation and use condition issues  definition of prototypes of metadata elements and qualifiers  eventual implementation of the metadata structure in an archival environment

February 14 th - 16 th, 2002 EMANI Project Meeting SUB Göttingen Standards  DC Metadata Initiative,  Core Metadata Elements (Library of Congress Digital Repository Development),  METS (Metadata Encoding & Transmission Standard),  …
