Operate SINCGARS Single-Channel (SC) TASK: 113-587-2070

Instructors:

Conditions: Given an operational SINCGARS, distant station, TM 11-5820-890-10-8, TM 11-5820-890-10-3, TM 5820-890-10-2, DA Pam 738-750 and simple key loader.

Standards: The standards are met when a secure communications check is conducted in SC mode with a distant station.

Why do we use the RT-1523E: **Reduced size and weight. Internal battery. Increased battery life. Enhanced display (Backlight level selectable). Only one front panel switch. Spare slots for future enhancements. Enhanced self -test (BIT) RT Mode may remain in FH to change net ID. Enhanced Operating Mode (EOM) All three digits of net ID may be changed by operator. Sync time may be loaded electronically from an Automated Net Control Device (ANCD), a Simple Key Loader (SKL), Precision Lightweight GPS Receiver (PLGR), Embedded GPS Receiver (EGR), manually via the keypad, or by ERF. RT will accept ERF if sync time is less than 100 days different from net sync time. New keypad with SIP features. GPS connector. AUX connector for HRCRD, 2-wire adapter, or CDU

RELIABILITY The reliability of radio communications depends largely on the selection of a good radio site. Since it is very difficult to select a site for a radio that satisfies all the technical, tactical, and security requirements, we compromise and select a primary site and an alternate site. If, for some reason, radio communications cannot be established and maintained at the primary location, the radio equipment can be moved a short distance to the alternate site.

Capabilities and Limitations The capabilities of the single-channel radio make it flexible, securable, mobile, and reliable. Radio communications facilities usually can be installed more quickly than wire communications. Thus, radio can be used as a primary means of communications during the initial stages of combat operations. Once installed in a vehicle, aircraft, or ship, the equipment is ready for use and does not require reinstallation. Wire communications require reinstallation with each move. Radio equipment is designed to meet mobility requirements and is used by airmobile, amphibious, mechanized, and dismounted units.

limitations of single-channel radio The limitations of single-channel radio must also be considered. Radio is the most detectable means of electronic communications and is subject to intentional and unintentional electronic interference. Current Threat conditions require good electronic counter countermeasures (ECCM) to include remoting techniques. To be capable of operating together, radios must have common or at least some overlapping frequencies. They must transmit and receive the same type signal and must be located within operating range of each other with a clear transmission path. Radio is the least secure means of communications, and it must be assumed that interception occurs every time a transmitter is placed in operation.

PERFORMANCE STEPS PERFORM STARTING PROCEDURES LOAD THE SIMPLE KEY LOADER ENTER THE NET a) Use correct procedures b) Conduct a secure communication check PREPAIR THE CONTROL MONITOR FOR OPERATIONS CHANGE THE RADIO FUNCTIONS USING CONTROL MONITOR PERFORM STOPPING PROCEDURES

INSTRUCTORS

Condition Given an operational sincgars, transfer fill device with cable, distant end station, tm 11-5820-890-10-8, da pam 750-8, da form 2404, and unit soi

Standard: STANDARD IS MET WHEN COMMUNICATIONS IS CONTINUED IN A SINGLE CHANNEL OR FREQUENCY HOPPING MODE OF OPERATION WITH A DISTANT END STATION, USING THE lcD DISPLAY AND THE “DURING” OPERATION CHECK RESULTS ARE RECORDED ON DA FORM 2404

Single-channel radio characteristics & capabilities The Sincgars family is designed on a modular basis to achieve maximum commonality among various ground and airborne configurations. A common RT is used in the manpack and all vehicle configurations. These individual components are totally interchangeable from one configuration to the next.

Single-channel radio characteristics & capabilities Sincgars operates on any 2,320 channels between 30-88 MHz, with a channel separation of 25 kilohertz (KHz). It is designed to operate in nuclear or hostile environments. Sincgars accepts either digital or analog input and imposes the signal onto a Secured channel(SC) or Frequency hop (FH) output signal.

Single-channel radio characteristics & capabilities In fh, the input changes frequencies about 100 times per second over portions of the tactical VHF range. This hinders threat intercept and jamming units from locating or disrupting friendly communications.

Single-channel radio characteristics & capabilities The Sincgars radio is compatible with current generations of single channel FM Radios in use of our NATO allies in single channel mode. Since our nato allies have not yet fielded frequency hopping radios, they can only communicate on discrete frequencies.

STEPS 1) PERFORM START-UP PROCEDURES (SET RADIO TO GPS TIME) 2) LOAD THE TRAFFIC ENCRIPTION KEY 3) ENTER THE NET: A) USE THE CORRECT PROCEDURES B) CONDUCT A SECURE COMMUNICATION CHECK. 4) PREPAIR CONTROL MONITOR FOR OPERATIONS.

STEPS CONT. 5) PERFORM NET MEMBER CUE LATE ENTRY: A) USE CORRECT PROCEDURES B) CONDUCT A SECURE COMMUNICATION CHECK. 6) CHANGE THE RADIO FUNCTIONS USING THE CONTROL MONITOR. 7) EXIT THE NET 8) PERFORM STOPPING PROCEDURES

QUESTIONS?

CHECK ON LEARNING

SINCGARS OPERATES ON HOW MANY CHANNELS? 2,450 2,320 2,420 2,340 None of the above

Answer: b)2,320 Sincgars operates on any 2,320 channels

Your Sincgars radio was left in a vehicle and exposed to an EMP due to a nuclear blast. Will your radio still work?

possible The Sincgars radio is nuclear survivable in that it is hardened against the effects of emp. Although it is not as vulnerable to emp as other solid state electronic devices, do not think that it is invulnerable to emp. The Sincgars radio is designed to operate in nuclear or hostile environments.

True or false Sincgars operates on any 2,320 channels between 30-88 KHz, with a channel separation of 25 kilohertz (KHz).
