S.E. Hinton Published The Outsiders in 1967 at the age of 17 (Began writing it at 15). The story was inspired by a real-life event at Hinton’s high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Outsiders is widely considered the first realistic young-adult novel. Other Hinton books include Rumble Fish, Tex, and That Was Then, This is Now. Susan Eloise Hinton

Since her narrator was a boy, Hinton's publishers suggested that she publish under the name of S. E. Hinton The Outsiders ranks as a classic, still widely read and one of the most important and taboo-breaking books. Finally, someone was writing about the real concerns and emotions of a teenager.

The cigarette is a symbol commonly seen in the book as well The cigarette is a symbol commonly seen in the book as well. Many of the Greasers started smoking at an early age. It made them feel older and helped them fit into their group. Later it became a way of passing time and keeping calm.

"Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.
