UKIERI Call for Bids An Overview UKIERI Secretariat August 2014

Programme Overview UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) started in April 2006 with the aim of enhancing educational links between India and the UK. UKIERI has been recognized as a key multi stakeholder programme that has strengthened the educational relations between the two countries UKIERI is being implemented with the aim to bring forth a unique initiative that strengthens the bilateral relationship between India and the UK and set an example of best practice in international cooperation. The initiative is working towards developing programmes that meets the priorities and needs of both India and the UK and bring about a systematic change in the educational sector of both India and the UK.

Programme Overview The programme was awarded an extension which was announced by the UK Prime Minister David Cameron and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in July Both Indian and UK Governments confirmed funding to support the programme. The programme would continue from 2011 till Four strands of programme: 1.Leadership Development 2.Innovation Partnerships 3. Skill Development 4. Enhancing mobility

UKIERI Strand 1 Leadership Development: Enhancing capacity of individuals and institutions on leadership skills for future Objective: To increase leadership capacity in schools and develop and deliver a programme that will meet the needs of the Indian education system. To develop an academic HE leadership programme that provides core knowledge and skills required to become an effective leader and link centres of excellence of Higher Education, both India and the UK. To develop an academic FE leadership programme that provides knowledge and skills required for institutional leadership in Further Education institutions and colleges and thereby creating sustainable linkages between India and the UK FEIs.

UKIERI Strand 2 Innovation Partnerships: Providing opportunities for institutions to collaborate on innovation and thematic partnerships. Key Objectives: Develop sustainable institutional partnerships between UK Higher Education and Indian Institutions jointly with University Grants Commission and Department of Science and Technology with the aim of stimulating innovation in Science and emerging areas of importance to both India and the UK. Support and partner with the Innovation Universities and develop partnerships with the emerging Indian Innovation centres to support research collaboration and knowledge transfer.

UKIERI Strand 3 Skills Development: Enhancing UK India collaborations in Skills development Objectives: Further Education institutions, Community Colleges and SMEs in the UK and India to partner and form consortia for Institutional Capacity Building to deliver training and activities encompassing the complete skills space in line with the requirements of Sector Skills Councils (SSCs). To support SSC consortia leading to operational strong sector skills bodies underpinned with occupational standards, qualifications and enhanced employer engagement resulting in strong Industry relevant skilled manpower.

UKIERI Strand 4 Enhancing mobility: Fostering student mobility and mutual recognition of learning Objectives: Support Work placement programme to provide opportunity to UK graduates to travel to India and work with companies for up to 1 year. Increase outward mobility of the UK students to India through Study India programme which gives them a social, economic and cultural exposure to help them become a global citizen. Develop policies and framework to support mutual recognition and equivalence of learning and achievement through India UK India UK Qualification recognition Taskforce.

Before you start Read through the strand pages to understand the objectives under each strand. Identify the area of work under the programme you would like to bid. Read through the eligibility criterion before deciding on the strand activity. Understand the requirements and identify working partners.

UGC Thematic Partnerships Key points to remember for bidding The sub-strand will strengthen engagement and encourage future potential collaborations between the Indian and UK higher education institutions by facilitating collaborations and promoting innovation Proposals should consider how the joint research will have impact, particularly via the UK and Indian’s institutions innovation hubs Applications across all themes -Science/Technology/Arts/Humanities are invited Direct costs of staff time, administration, equipment, infrastructure and overhead costs are not included in the grant funding. Duration of partnership may not exceed 15 months. In India all those public institutions which are fit to receive development grants from University Grants Commission are eligible to apply. Value of each partnership funded under this sub strand will not be greater than £40,000 per project proposal.

DST Thematic Partnerships Key points to remember for bidding The sub-strand will strengthen engagement and encourage future potential collaborations between the Indian and UK higher education institutions by facilitating collaborations and promoting innovation Proposals should consider how the joint research will have impact, particularly via the UK and Indian’s institutions innovation hubs. Direct costs of staff time, administration, equipment, infrastructure and overhead costs are not included in the grant funding. DST may support recruitment of one staff to work as Junior Research Fellow (JRF) or Senior Research Fellow (SRF) as per project requirement. This is only applicable for Indian Institutions. Duration of partnership may not be exceed 15 months. Only 7 themes currently open: 1.Climate Change 2.Computer Science 3.Public Health and Well being 4.Food Water Energy 5.Sustainable cities 6.Big Data 7.High Value manufacturing

General rules Only one application is allowed from any lead applicant and team members should be involved in one single application. Partnerships that have received UKIERI grant (across activities) in the last two years are not eligible to apply. Team members including lead applicants that have received UKIERI grant (across activities) in the last two years are not eligible to apply. Multiple applications from same lead applicant will be rejected in the first level of short listing. Incomplete applications in any respect will be rejected at the administrative stage of short listing. Value of each partnership funded under this sub strand will not be greater than £40,000 per project proposal.
