CISB594 – Business Intelligence Assignment Revisit

What is expected in the submission Your group work is to conduct investigation/information gathering in a business of your choice to determine how data warehousing, data mining, OLAP, and visualization business intelligence tools could assist the executives/management team in their work. Write up a proposal describing your findings. Include discussions on benefits, disadvantages as well as diagrams in your report as you see appropriate. Identify a business. Assume that your group has been commissioned by the business to produce a presentation to the board proposing/showing how Business Intelligence can be beneficial to the organization. Your proposal should be in the form of a report, describing the background of the business, problem faced (from the context of business intelligence only), recommendation for solution and a conceptual system overview (supported by architectural diagram and other necessary details) Screen mock-ups to demonstrate the end users’ side will also be useful. You are not required to produce any working software. Screen mock-ups can be originated in any technology/software of your choice.

Section B : Group Assignment (Marking Scheme) The business scenario - Description of the current system (without BI) Managements requirements based on the current system (common business questions asked by the management to help them with decision making Critical views on how BI can be beneficial to the management team from business perspectives 30 Proposal for BI system Discuss the architecture and data warehouse model approach – include diagram and justify the choice Discuss whether your team will recommend the organization to purchase tools from vendors or build the system itself. Justify your suggestion. Discuss and build the mock screen to demonstrate support for decision making for the users mentioned in the business scenario (images of dashboards will be good) Discuss what are the possible implementation issues your team foresees to happen in the organization and how it can be addressed. Discuss how web analytics and customer analytics aspect in data mining can be applicable for data in your assignment project. 50 Presentation skills and a demonstration of a good team work, including PowerPoint slides. To be demonstrated through the executive summary and the PowerPoint presentation. 10

Write a scenario for a business of your choice Write a scenario for a business of your choice. In this scenario include the description about the nature of business, the business’ position in the industry, the level of skills for IT people in the business. How you describe your business here will be the base for your answers for the questions in this assignment.

Management requirement (common business questions asked by top management): Where should you get the answer from? What can the answer do to your business Which advertising approach should we invest on the most? - Check then advertisement history and how much sale was made out of the advertisement - Refer to sale database, marketing database in the last x years By knowing the answer to this, the management will be able to focus and invest on only the advertisement that brings in the most sale to the organization. What is the best way to display our products on the aisle? Check customers’ purchase patterns -Check customers’ background - refer to what database? By understanding customers’ purchase pattern, the arrangement for product display can be made to encourage impulse purchase When should we get temp workers and how much should we offer? Check the number negative feedbacks about customer service - Check the length of time used to assist/process transaction at counter against the number of customer a day - Check number of temp workers Refer to what database?. By establishing the busiest time for sales we can identify when we should be hiring more temp workers.

Critical views on how BI can be beneficial to the management team from business perspectives Explain how Business Intelligence can assist with decision making and how competitive advantage can be achieved through getting answers for complex business questions that will require the business to look for answers from many sources.

Decide which approach will be suitable for this business Decide between Inmon and Kimball Justify your choice. (Refer to the Data warehouse slides discussing the differences between Inmon and Kimball for some ideas) Include the Business Intelligence architecture diagram for this choice of approach, label accordingly.

Decide which approach your team will take in the development of the BI system. Will you use your own IT personnel? (do they have the expertise – check your scenario) Will you hire the vendor to do it? Justify your answer.

Design some screen graphical representations that can show how the questions in the first part of the assignment is being answered. E.g.

First you need to understand what is web analytics and customer analytics. You can also include optimization if you wish here. Look at your business scenario, and discuss how web analytics and customer analytics can be used and how it can help to achieve competitive advantage or answer critical business questions Explain for each of the above separately

We will not do a presentation for this assignment at this stage. The 10 marks will be awarded based on the overall presentation of the assignment submitted. Professionally documented and compiled. No Powerpoint slides are required. The final submission will also speak for how good the team work is.
