EVOLUTION VHS: analog DVD: digital BD: high-definition Enables recording, rewriting, and playback of high-definition video. Capable of storing information that the DVD and CD are not capable of holding. It is more secured than others. Courtesy Blu-ray Disc Founders “Blu-ray Disc Format White Paper”

WHAT IS BLU-RAY DISC? Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD) is the name of a next- generation optical disc format. The Blu-ray disc uses blue violet laser with wave length of 405nm, hence it is named as “Blu-ray”. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data.

6 The blu-ray disc uses blue violet laser with wave length of 405nm. So it is named as blu-ray. Benefits of using blue violet laser(405nm)are :- 1- shorter wavelength than red laser (650nm), which makes it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision. 2 -allows data to be packed more tightly and stored in less space 3-possible to fit more data on the disc even though it's the same size as CD/DVD. 4-with the change of numerical aperture to 0.85 is what enables Blu-ray Disc to hold 25GB/50GB. NAMING:

BLU-RAY FEATURES 7 Media type : High –density Optical disc Encoding : MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC (H.264), and VC-1 Capacity: 25 GB (single layer), 50 GB (dual layer) Read mechanism: Mbit/s & Mbit/s Developed by: Blu-ray Disc Association Usage: Data storage, High-definition video and Play Station 3D Games

DEVELOPMENT Developed by Blu-ray Association (BDA), a group of leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers, with more than 180 member companies from all over the world. The Board of Directors currently consist of :- - Apple Company, Inc. - Dell Inc. - Hewlett Packard Company - Hitachi Ltd. - Matsushita Electric Corporation -LG Electronics Inc. - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. -Pioneer Corporation - Electronics Sharp Corporation -TDK Corporation - Royal Philips Sony Corporation -Sun Microsystems, Inc th Century Fox -Thomson Corporation - Warner Bros. Entertainment -Walt Disney Pictures

NEXT-GENERATION TECHNOLOGY  IS BLU-RAY THE SAME THING AS HD-DVD? No, HD-DVD (previously known as AOD) is the name of a competing next-generation optical disc format developed by Toshiba and NEC. The format is quite different from Blu-ray, but also relies heavily on blue-laser technology to achieve a higher storage capacity. The read- only discs (HD DVD-ROM) will hold 15GB and 30GB, the rewritable discs (HD DVD-RW) will hold 20GB and 32GB, while the recordable discs (HD DVD-R) won't support dual-layer discs, so they will be limited to 15GB. The format is being developed within the DVD Forum as a possible successor to the current DVD technology.

BLU-RAY DISC Technology

BLU-RAY ADVANTAGES  record high-definition television (HDTV) without any quality loss  instantly skip to any spot on the disc  record one program while watching another on the disc  create playlists  edit or reorder programs recorded on the disc  automatically search for an empty space on the disc to avoid recording over a program  access the Web to download subtitles and other extra features

DISADVANTAGES OF BLU-RAY DISC There are no apparent disadvantages of the Blu-ray Disc (BD). AIM OF BLU-RAY DISC  The main objective of Blu-ray Disc is to enter the HDTV market which is now very popular in Japan and America. APPLICATIONS OF BLU-RAY DISC  The target application of Blu-ray Disc is in the field of HDTV (High Definition Television).  The Blu-ray Disc (BD) is also to be used for PC data storage.

FUTURE OF BLU-RAY DISC The future plan of the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association) is to replace VCRs and DVD recorders over the coming years, with the transition to HDTV. The format is also likely to become a standard for PC data storage and HD movies in the future. Expect the BD to become more prevalent once the HDTV market establishes its presence. Audio and video will reach higher qualities with larger storage space. Look for BD with more than two layers as the technology is further refined

CONCLUSION As in respect to the huge storage capacity, high resolution giving rise to the recording of true quality high definition video (HDTV) and more importantly it is backwardly compatible with current CD and DVD it seems to be a dream come true technology in storage market both for the high definition video (HDTV) and as well as for PCs.

The Blue-ray Technology ….Is going to dominate the next decade
