Top 5 Grammar Tips In today’s lesson you will learn how to improve your writing by mastering 5 grammar techniques.

Strengthen Subordination Why do we use subordinate clauses? How can we embed subordinate clauses? E.g. Jane, the girl who lives next door, was given a kitten for her birthday.

Conquer the Comma There are many different ways to use a comma. Around the room there are various rules and examples for using commas. As you walk around the room, read the examples and follow the pattern to write your own sentence. Remember, commas cannot replace full stops.

Control Coordination Good writing should flow. Each point should be connected in some way to the previous point. Connectives act like signposts, telling the reader which direction the text is heading in.

Secure the Semi-Colon You have been given some evidence showing the semi-colon in use. As a team, work out how and why the semi-colon is used in each example. Try to write some of your own sentences using semi-colons.

Play with Punctuation Your punctuation is as important as your vocabulary. Incorrect punctuation often inhibits meaning more than incorrect spelling. Try to correctly punctuate the text. Now read the text aloud in pairs, switching at each piece of punctuation. Why is punctuation important?
