Investor Research This is a tutorial on using Investor Research in SMG.

The SMG provides a facility for students to lookup Ticker symbols and to research stock and mutual fund data from within their portfolio. Students must use ticker symbols when entering trades. Select the Investor Research link.

Selecting the Investor Research link will take you to this page. If you dont know the ticker symbol, you will select Ticker Lookup to find ticker symbols. Current Dow Jones

You have several options to choose from when looking up ticker symbols and data. We will first look at the Power Search. Power Search & Symbol Search use the Reuters system (which many brokers use).

Selecting the Power Search link will take you to this page. Type in the company name. To narrow your search, select US ticker in the drop down box. Then select go name.

The search for Microsoft gives us two results--Microsoft Corp and Microsoftware Intl. We will select the link for Microsoft Corp common stock - NASDAQ for more information. (Sometimes the results could list several matches.) Be sure the stock is listed on the NYSE, NASDAQ, or AMEX.

Selecting the Microsoft link will give us this page, with current Microsoft stock data. The RIC code is the stock symbol – (leave off anything after the period)so the Ticker symbol for Microsoft is MSFT. Select the link below to get detailed instructions on using the Symbol Search and Power Search. Make copies for each team. Using Investor Research in the SMG. Using Investor Research in the SMG RIC code is the Ticker Symbol (leave off.OQ and use MSFT)

Going back to the Investor Research link, type in MSFT and you can find further data on Microsoft, including price charts and current news articles. Use the Help button to get more information about the data here. Stock data is delayed minute on the Internet.

Students also have the option to use the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ websites for ticker lookup and research. We will use the New York Stock Exchange link for another example. Use the Ticker lookup link in Investor Research to get to this page.

At the NYSE website, you can look up ticker symbols or get quote data if you already know the ticker symbol. To lookup a ticker symbol, select the Symbol Lookup link. (To get quote data, enter the ticker symbol and select Quick Quote.) We will use the Symbol Lookup link.

This window will pop up and you can type in the company name, then select GO!.

You ticker symbol search will give you this page. Select the correct link (Microsoft Corporation) for more data.

This is the data for Microsoft from the NYSE website. Note that all stocks and mutual funds are available in the NYSE and NASDAQ website quote system – not just those listed on their exchanges.

There are many sites on the Internet for students to use for stock market data research. You can find some of these links in Useful Links at the bottom of student portfolios. Many search engines, like Yahoo and MSN offer excellent resources too.
