Starting a SIG Kathleen Fisher Vice Chair for SIG Development

Process (Idealized) Interested parties get the idea. They find information on the process on the web: They submit a short proposal to the Vice Chair for SIG Development (me) and the Head of SIG Services (Donna). We review, ask for clarifications, revisions, etc., until proposal addresses required points. We present proposal to SGB EC. They say –Yes: ask for full proposal. –No: ask for additional revisions, decline. Full proposal is presented to SGB for discussion, feedback, and final decision.

Preliminary Information Primary focus of the new special interest group. Primary audience/primary need to be served. Initial SIG activities: –publications, conferences, workshops, … Discussion of overlaps with existing SIGS List of consenting, core group volunteers who would lead the SIG.

Some points of confusion ACM and IEEE are not the same organization. Existing conferences belong to the sponsoring organization, not the volunteers, and so may not be easy to shift to a new SIG.

In the Pipeline SIG BioInformatics SIG Dev (computers in the developing world) SIG Wireless Health (computers in healthcare) SIG Game SIG Services SIG Logic SIG EC (Economic and Social Computing) Note: All of these proposals are in a preliminary stage. I suspect many will not reach the next stage.
