WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A PROFESSIONAL?

 Architecture is the art, science, and PROFESSION of planning, designing, and supervising the construction of new buildings, landscapes, communities, and furnishings within their environments in accordance with the principles of utility, strength, and aesthetics.

 Occupations require expertise, training, and skill.  Professions also require expertise, training, and skill. However, professions are based in fields of higher learning  Why is it important for professions to be based in higher learning?  The judgments of professionals can either benefit or endanger the public good.

LLengthy and arduous education EExpertise and judgment RRegistration-requires internships to obtain credits toward licensing exam RRelative Autonomy-self-determined/governed, not controlled by owners/managers as in the production of goods RRarely change vocations HHigh level of prestige and respect HHigh levels of compensation MMembers of Professional Organizations

 Ethics are rules or standards for moral behavior.  Ethics express a set of values held by a unique and finite group.

Ethics are based on common values and moral laws such as  Religious doctrine  Social conventions  Secular beliefs  Traditional philosophies  Values of courtesy, civility, mutual respect, fairness, or equality

Society expects a professional to assume certain obligations:  Establish and maintain standards for admission and practice  Protecting the public good when working for an individual client  Respecting public welfare over personal gain
